AUGUST CLIENT LETTER: U.S. Economy Not on Sound Footing
It is our view that the U.S. economy is far from being on sound footing, with potential bubble conditions existing in the stock and bond markets. Considerable blame lies at the feet of the U.S. government and the Federal Reserve. As time passes, economic conditions as measured by GDP continue to look weak, and yet the government continues to borrow from abroad a big portion of what it spends. The debt burden on Americans increases as the Fed continues to debase the currency with its money-printing excess.—Read more by clicking here

Where Are America’s Richest Counties?

Some unpleasant news from the U.S. Census Bureau’s updated list on America’s wealthiest counties. The richest counties surround Washington, DC, the producer of nothing but debt, deficits and international intervention.

The question at the core of most of today’s debates in American politics is whether all people have an unalienable right to keep the fruits of their own labor—as the Founders believed and the Declaration of Independence (properly understood) asserts—or whether the government should funnel vast sums of money to the nation’s capital and then magnanimously redistribute it back to the tributaries.  Well, the stats are in, and it seems that neither of these two notions is really being fulfilled.  To be sure, Americans’ money is flowing to the nation’s capital. [...]

[...] But it’s not flowing back. Based on the median family income in 2012, the wealthiest county in America—by far—is Arlington Co., Va., located just across the Potomac River from D.C.  In fact, Arlington’s median family income ($137,216) is more than $10,000 higher than that of any other county in the United States.

Top 10 Political Books #10: End the Fed

end the fedWe’re counting down the top 10 political books. These books should be required reading for all.

Number 10: End the Fed, by Ron Paul

Amazon: In the post-meltdown world, it is irresponsible, ineffective, and ultimately useless to have a serious economic debate without considering and challenging the role of the Federal Reserve.

Most people think of the Fed as an indispensable institution without which the country’s economy could not properly function. But in END THE FED, Ron Paul draws on American history, economics, and fascinating stories from his own long political life to argue that the Fed is both corrupt and unconstitutional. It is inflating currency today at nearly a Weimar or Zimbabwe level, a practice that threatens to put us into an inflationary depression where $100 bills are worthless. What most people don’t realize is that the Fed — created by the Morgans and Rockefellers at a private club off the coast of Georgia — is actually working against their own personal interests. Congressman Paul’s urgent appeal to all citizens and officials tells us where we went wrong and what we need to do fix America’s economic policy for future generations.

The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth Series Two—#1

Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., C.N.S., has created one of the most vital books on the health of your family you will ever find, The 150 Healthiest Food on Earth. The lavishly illustrated, 358-page weighty tome gives you more vital information on foods that can keep your family healthy than any other publication I have ever come across. And I am always on the look out. I have given the book to family members and often advise it for others. I have now selected a “Great 10” list of food choices to share with you. My goal here is pass on ideas that perhaps you did not previously know about.

coconut Coconut:  Jonny leads here that he wants to right one of the great nutritional misconceptions of all time. Coconut—and its oil—is one of the healthiest and amazing things you can ingest. It has been long observed that people from the Pacific Islands and Asia, whose diets are high in coconut oil, are surprisingly free from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other degenerative diseases. Plus digestive problems are rare. Coconut’s medium-chain fatty acids are easy to metabolize and are used for energy rather than as stored as fat. Fifty percent of the fat in coconut is lauric acid, which is antiviral and antimicrobial.  According to Jonny, in the human body, lauric acid is formed into monolaurin, which is basically a bug killer.

Pension Reform?

Mayor Jim Gray of Lexington, Kentucky is taking a victory lap for pension reform. But at the end of the day Lexington, KY is still in the pension business. A true victory for taxpayers would be a complete exit from pensions. The private sector, where most taxpayers work, has already shifted to a defined contribution or 401(k) plan. It’s time the public sector does the same. You can read Gray’s piece here.

America, Russia and Iran working together on Syria?

It’s a possibility, if the neocons in Washington can be vocally disarmed. Iran has a big potential step forward with its new and open president. Russia has no interest in an ongoing civil war in Syria. Turkey is not often mentioned, but Turkey most certainly does not need Syrian mayhem at its doorstep. There are many potential winners to be counted and, beyond the Al- Qaeda rabble, few losers. It will not hurt America to be a good listener and to avoid provocative commentary likely to jam the gears of the negotiating process. Here Pat Buchanan offers a good outline of events.

Dividend Paying Stocks and Taxes

This year the tax on dividend paying stocks for the highest wage earners, thanks to Obamacare, is 23.8%. One way to avoid this tax altogether is to invest in dividend paying stocks in your tax deferred accounts. If you have a 401k collecting dust in a corporate account somewhere then now is the time to do an IRA Rollover to Fidelity or Vanguard. Don’t let inertia get the better of you. Set-up a brokerage account and construct a portfolio of high yielding dividend paying stocks tax-free.

Entire A-10 Fleet on the Chopping Block

The USAF has put America’s cheapest, most reliable, mission survivable attack jets on the chopping block. The A-10 Thunderbolt, most known for its 30 mm GAU-8/A Avenger Gatling cannon, has been in service for over 30 years and is on the brink of retirement, thanks to budget cuts. It was a key player in the Gulf War taking out 900+ Iraqi tanks, 2,000 military vehicles, and 1,200 artillery fixtures. The A-10, which costs approximately $13 million each, is being replaced by the overpriced under performing F-35 Fighter program. A single F-35 is expected to cost between $120 to $150 million when all is said and done, and that’s not including the cost of the weapons system which could cost another $184 million per unit. This doesn’t even take into account the operational cost per hour for the F-35.

The Air Force will be forced to look at cutting single-mission aircraft under continuing budget cuts because more savings will be realized by ending the full weapon system, including infrastructure and training, as opposed to cutting just squadrons. With the F-35 coming online to take over the close-air support role, the venerable Thunderbolt II will be a likely target, Gen. Mike Hostage told reporters at the Air Force Association’s Air and Space Conference.

“This is not something I want to do,” Hostage said, explaining that no decisions had been made.

Hostage said he had already talked to Army officials about losing the A-10 and using other jets to take over the close-air support role. The Army was “not happy” about the possibility, Hostage said.

“I will not lose what we have gained in how we learned to support the Army,” Hostage said. “I had to make sure the Army understood that I am not backing away from the mission.”

Hostage said the service can do the close-air support role with the F-35, but it would be more expensive and “not as impressive” without the famous GAU-8 Avenger 30 millimeter gun.

“In a perfect world, I would have 1,000 A-10s,” Hostage said. “I can’t afford it. I can’t afford the fleet I have now. If I cut the fleet in half, do I save enough to get through this problem?
