DEWALT LAUNCH EVENT

Tomorrow morning I'm flying to Orlando Florida to attend DEWALTS newest launch event.

This one day event is being held at Disney's Hollywood Studios.  I'm sure DEWALT has something amazing coming out so be sure to keep an eye on Facebook and Twitter as I'll be posting pictures and updates.

Before the disappointing Patriots football game, I spent the day gluing up a set of Maple butcher block counter tops to make a kitchen island. Boy is Maple heavy!

Each counter half cost $250 each and was joined together with biscuits and glue to make the island top.

 Stainless Steel Counter Top

Dear Concord Carpenter,

First of all, I really enjoy reading A Concord Carpenter, so much cool information! I don't know if you're interested in submissions, but I figured, what the heck! Maybe you are...

I wanted to share a project of mine which I'm very happy with: my new stainless steel kitchen counters which me and my husband installed ourselves. When we were remodeling our kitchen we were debating about what counters to choose. I loved the idea of stainless steel counters, so industrial, natural and durable, however if you get them professionally installed then they can be pretty pricey.

We worked with a local sheet metal place that gave us a very reasonable quote on shaping a piece of stainless steel if we did some of the work ourselves: so we made a plywood model of our counters, brought it to our local shop and later installed it all on top of our old counters. The result has been great. We got really nice counters which ended up costing us around $400 (roughly $20/square foot.) Now, that's an excellent price, and our counters are perfect!

thanks ~ Linn

Old House Restoration Blunders

Old houses are notorious for often having obsolete systems and failing, sometimes unsafe structural components, lacking insulation or energy efficient system.  To the trained eye an old house renovation is an opportunity to restore old life to a home but to others it can be a trap full of complex projects and hidden pitfalls.

As a restoration contractor I have seen many situations where homeowners have spend thousands of dollars in restorations that commence with no planning, no idea of a budget or unrealistic expectations.

I've also seen instances where people make changes to their home that completely change the historic or aesthetic character of their home due to lack of information.

Then there's the people who hastily jump into a project and unknowingly throw away money by forgoing valuable tax credits basically, people who miss key opportunities in their attempt to restore their old house while making it modern and efficient to live in.

Here are blunders I've seen often in my work, with some advice on how to sidestep them:
