Current Project:

This week I started repairs on the barn "I wish was mine."

The siding and sheathing on this barn is starting to rot at the bottom - due to no gutters and water splashing off the ground.

The structure is a pole barn design which means the vertical structural support poles are set into the ground on concrete piers.   Horizontal two by sheathing boards connect the poles and become the structural sheathing.

The barn was sided with tongue and groove vertical, pine siding.

We are going to replace the lower boards with pressure treated 2x4's and then use vertical grain, pre-primed,  cedar, tongue and groove siding.

To eliminate the water splashing effect we will also trench the "roof run off area" and install gravel. [French drain]

Stay tuned....

Carpenter Ants and the Downy woodpecker

According to a friend of mine this little bird is a Downy Woodpecker and is often responsible for alot of damage on homes.

Often times this woodpecker will "drum" on a house during the breeding season. They hammer on hollow sections of a home, such as the eaves framing or fascia, leaving small, localized damage.

When you have bugs, they will find that spot and make long, narrow holes as they track the bugs in voids in the wood.

Remember - Woodpecker means bugs and probably termites or carpenter ants.

Goof - fast - Cheap

Pick Two

Understanding the cost x quality x time priority of a process or project is very important both as a consumer and as a contractor or anyone who works on projects.

It really doesn't matter what line of business you're in  customers all want their product done well, fast and cheap.
