What's new at ConcordCarpenter?

I just got back yesterday from the Irwin Marples saw blade product launch in Venice Italy.

Venice was magical and the saw blade facility in Udine, Italy was impressive.  The plant was so clean you could literally eat off the floor.

I was so impressed that I plan on writing an article on how these saw blade are made.

What also impressed me was Irwins commitment to make a quality blade that will definitely compete with higher end saw blades for professional woodworkers and finish carpenters.

Questions from readers:

Dear ConcordCarpenter,

I'm just getting into hobby wood working, lawn swings, picnic tables and other lawn furniture. Saw the "Blade Runner" and just checking reviews and would like to thank you!

I will be using 2×4"s & 2×6"s making curved cuts 20 to 32 inches long on some projects and beveled or angled cuts. What are your thoughts? "Blade Runner" or bandsaw & miter saw?

Thanks again! Marshall

Hi Marshall, thanks for your note.  If you plan on cutting anything bigger than 3/4" stock I would recommend using a miter saw, band saw and if outdoors a jigsaw.

Check out a few of my reviews here:

Dear ConcordCarpenter,

One of my rafters is cracking, about 14 inches, in the middle of a 2x6.  The rafters are spaced 16 inches, span about 14 feet. There is nothing above it. I think the pitch is about 30 degrees. The ridge board may also be 2x6.
What is the best way to repair it?
Thanks, Robert Prescott

Hi Robert,

There are several ways to address this but first tell me more. Is this near a skylight or dormer? Anything over it like a copula? what is the spacing of rafters? total span?

You can always try to sister another rafter along side the split one. The sister will not be any stronger than the longest piece you can get into your attic - most likely you will not be able to get a full length.

Procedure: sister cracked rafter with two 2x6 one on each side glued and nailed, the longest you can slide into the attic. You might try to jack the old rafter to close the crack with a diagonal support attached to your ceiling joists BUT only if you have a wall petition below the ceiling joist to support the brace.

Once this repair is complete - add collar ties if there are none.
Good Luck, ROB

Hey ConcordCarpenter!

A reader recommended your site to me. I love all your tutorials! Great site! I have a a quick question for you. I recently found this bed on the side of the road and it had the head and foot board.

I'm wondering if you have any good suggestions for adding a frame to the bottom. Thanks for your time! Have a great week!

Thanks,  JamieLyn,

Hi JamieLyn,

What a great looking piece.  I'd buy one of those standard metal frames that always come with a new mattress.  Then I would attach the frame to the boards by either predrilling and long wood screws or maybe thru bolts.   On the thru bolt I'd us a carriage bolt, slightly recessed with a wood plug cover.  without seeing it I'm  not 100% sure on the bolts.

What ever way you choose make sure that the head and foot boards rest on the floor to take the weight off the attachment point.

Good luck! ROB
