What's new at ConcordCarpenter?

It's been a busy week, the geodesic dome was a huge hit and my two highschool friends did a great job presenting their project.     This was a fun and interesting projects.  I learned alot in the process but am glad its over.

Have you ever had the pleasure of finding a book that you just can't put down?  Maybe even reading the whole book in two or three sittings?

I find anything I read from Malcom Gladwell is like that.  I just picked up his most recent book Outliers - hope it's good.

My favorite book of his was Blink: the power of thinking without thinking.  I liked it so much I wrote a review on the book.  I highly recommend you read the book!

Contractor Customer Service 101:

Did you know . . .  that in the first 7 seconds people make 11 impressions about you?

Here's the scenerio:   You're a contractor [plug in any profession] going to a meet a potential client for the first time.

The moment this potential client sees you, his or her brain makes a thousand calculations:

Are you professional? Are you the person they want to do business with? Are you the person that is best for their needs? Are you trustworthy, competent, likeable, confident?

These calculations are made at lightning speed. Researchers from NYU found that we make eleven major decisions about one another in the first seven seconds of meeting.  That's fast!

In business interactions, first impressions are crucial. Look I know we have no control over how people think but there are some thing's you can do to make a better first impression.

You can start by working on how you communicate over the phone and then show up at the time you agreed on.  First impressions are heavily influenced by nonverbal cues rather than verbal cues.

Here are a few nonverbal ways to make a positive first impression:

Smile. A smile is an invitation, a sign of welcome. It says, "I'm friendly and approachable."

Make eye contact. Looking at someone's eyes transmits energy and indicates interest and openness.

Raise your eyebrows. Open your eyes slightly more than normal to simulate the "eyebrow flash" that is the universal signal of recognition and acknowledgement.

Shake hands. This is the quickest way to establish rapport. It's also the most effective. Research shows it takes an average of three hours of continuous interaction to develop the same level of rapport that you can get with a single handshake.

Lean in slightly. Leaning forward shows you're engaged and interested. But be respectful of the other person's space. That means, in most business situations, staying about two feet away.

You've got just seven seconds - how you handle it may make a world of difference.  check out my related articles below.

Cool NEW Products:

The folks at DEWALT have been pretty busy this year with all sorts of neww tool releases and additions to their product lines.

Their NEW DESIGN Recip Saw model#  DWE357 is coming soon and will probably retail at $ 129.00

I first saw this last year at DEWALTS Orlando media event an I liked it's is light weight and well balanced design.

One handed operation is easy and I'm sure thie weight will be appreciated with overhead cutting applications.

I'm not sure this recip saw will replace your heavy demo recip but we'll see.  I  plan on doing some testing soon.  I'm pretty excited about this new tool.
