What's new at Concord Carpenter?

Pretty normal week here at ACC, getting ready to send the kids back to school.  Not that I'm celebrating or anything but this was me yesterdaywith my daughter.

There is one week left to enter to win the set of Irwin Marples Chisels.

Everyone loves to shout out that Made in the USA is needed more but do you really take steps to support companies that make products in the US?

I recently visited Channellock and was impressed at their American sucess story.

Some of you folks enjoyed it as well and have requested that I host a Channellock giveaway.  Most of the folks want to see a plier and cutter set giveaway.  While I'm not sure Channellock will participate I will ask.

I'll look into this and get back to you folks soon.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore!

House in background

Last week we spent some time in a cica 1960 house on a salvage misson to save windows, doors and other stuff from demolition.

All of the items saved were slotted to goo to Habitat for Humanity ReStore.   Habitat ReStores  accept donations of new and gently-used building materials and household goods.  The Habitat ReStore sells new and used items to the public at a fraction of the retail price, typically 50% to 90% off.
The proceeds benefit Habitat's mission to build homes to help low-income families build and purchase affordable homes.

Check out the photo album on salvage misson at our facebook page.

Today I meet with and interview Kim Trainor from the Billerica, MA Habitat ReStore.  Look for this interview and a segment on us showing how to carefully remove items for salvage on the next Concord Carpenter cable TV show.

Also stay tuned for an informative article on this project and what's needed to do a salvage operation in next months Extreme How-To Magazine.

What's Important in a Jobsite Tablesaw?

Dewalt DW745 and Bosch GTS 1031 10-inch tables saws

Which Table Saw would You Choose?

As a remodeling contractor and finish carpenter what is important for me is accuracy, durability and portability.

I recently took two very nice and very popular tablesaws to the jobsite and ran them through real life, jobsite conditons.

How'd they perform?  Which one would I choose?

Got Ants?

Controlling Ants

As a renovation contractor I see ants in just about every home I work on, mostly around damp wood as a result of water intrusion or lack of proper maintenance. When you think about the fact that there are 1.5 million ants on the planet for every person then it's easier to understand why I see so many ants.

The most common types of ants that you see inside a home are carpenter ants, acrobat ants, pavement ants and odorous house ants. Each ant has unique characteristics that may affect the best way to control them but there are some very common methods you can deploy on you own.

When dealing with ants it's best to  first take a moment to understand what they are and what their up to before trying to control or eradicate them.
