What's new at Concord Carpenter?

Hi Folks,

This week we have been busy performing exterior repairs on a gourgous colonial home in Concord called the Thoreau-Alcott House.

The house was built in 1849 by Josiah Davis and was added to the National Historic Register in 1976.

Henry David Thoreau moved to this home in 1850 with his family; he stayed until his death on May 6, 1862.  After the death of her mother Abby May, Louisa May Alcott purchased the home for her sister Anna Alcott Pratt, though she moved there as well along with her father Amos Bronson Alcott. It was in this home that Louisa wrote her novel Jo's Boys (1886), a sequel to Little Women (1868).

Today, the home remains privately owned andis getting some TLC from Concord Carpenter.

A fun fact about Thoreau - he was a jack of all trades including a carpenter.
I swear some of the wood were replacing he installed!!

Henry claimed his trades were a Schoolmaster, a Private Tutor, a Surveyor, a Gardener, a Farmer, a Painter, I mean a House Painter, a Carpenter, a Mason, a Day Laborer, a Pencil-Maker, a Glass-paper Maker, a Writer, and sometimes a Poetaster.   Pretty busy guy!

Woodworking Tips and Tools

This past weekend rained so I took the opportunity to clean out my workshop.  What I did not realize was just how many useful jigs, tools and fixtures I received from Rockler that have helped me make my shop more efficient, organized and safer.

Dust Collection

Items such as the Dust Right Quick Release Kit has made my small shop dust collection a dream  and the air safer to breath.  Not only does it allow me to easily and quickly switch my 4" dust collection hose between two machines, it allows me to do it tool free, saving me time.

The photo below shows how I quickly switch the Dust Right port back and forth from my upper router table fence to the lower white pipe that feeds my table saw.

 Workshop Mobility

I also installed these very cool Rockler Lever-Action Lifts that can be used to make mobile bases or attached to shop furniture.  For a small shop this is a game changer.    Now you can move your heavy shop furniture or tables out in the center of the room to use and then store it against the wall when done.

The Rockler 4-Pc. Caster Kit can also be used to move heavy objects like shop equipment, appliances, and furniture.  I uesd these caster out on my shaper table which weighs at lease 250 pounds.

Now I can roll it around with one finger!!!

 Rockler Galvanized Router Table Cabinet

This steel cabinet router table cabinet, photo above, was designed by Rockler for woodworkers and serious do-it-yourselfers, serves as a router table workstation, provides room for storage in the under cabinet, has internal dust collection, and also has options for adding convenient shelves and drawers.

In the photo above - check out the iterior compartment to capture the dust from the router - very cool!
