What's new at Concord Carpenter?

This past week I spent juggling four projects.   One of them we filmed for the ConcordCarpenter cable TV show;  we installed a Bilco bulkhead door.

The interesting part about these doors is that they now come with a powder coated finish and four colors to choose from.

Many of us have lived in houses with metal bulkhead doors but these doors are now better made and have some interesting features.

Which features?   What is powder coating?

Dewalt Has An Interesting Tool Out

DWE357 Compact Reciprocating Saw

If you look close at the photo above you can see two locations for a recip blade.  That top location
allows you to almost get a perfect flush cut and is certainly a way better way to flush cut that my
existing recip saw allows.  Kudos to you Dewalt!

More importantly this new compact recip saw is lighter, smaller and better balanced than anything out there right now.  Watch my 3 minute video review on this bad boy!!!

What Do You Use Gorilla Super Glue For?

I've written about Gorilla Super Glue and have used it many times to repair all sorts of things and even used it in place of stitches this Saturday.  Yup - stitches.

Gorilla glue will cringe when they see this.  Neither Gorilla nor do I endorse using their glue this way.  I did this one on my own!

The story starts off with me running around like a chicken with it's head cut off trying to prepare my house, yard and patio for a cook out with 14 family and friends.  I finished everything with minutes to spare and decided I wanted to treat myslef to a cold beer that I had packed on ice in a cooler several hours earlier . . .  fair enough reward ~ I thought!

When I reached into the cooler and dug down to the bottom where the beer was I sliced my middle finger open on a broken beer bottle.    Almost an inch long and fairly deep.

I've received lots of cuts in construction and this one needed stitches.   The problem was I didnt want to go sit 6 hours in an ER and miss the party so I taped it up and stayed home for the party.

The next day, the bleeding had stopped but I had a flapping "open" wound that, based on past experience,  was going to take 2-3 weeks to close without stitches.  I've had many of these types of cuts, you have to keep them taped for a few weeks in order for it to close.

Then I got the idea to use superglue.  I pinched the wound closed and glued it.  Once the superglue dried I did not need the bandage and could use the finger to press things like the keys on the computer to "type this post."

Moral of the story:  I'm going to get some medical grade super glue for my first aid kit at home and on the jobsite..

Interesting Facts On Cyanoacrylate Wound Bonding :

Using superglue to close a wound works but not advisable, especially if there is artery, muscle or tendon damage.  Flesh wounds only.

Using superglue to close a wound may produce extreme skin irritation and skin death when purchased in over the counter form. The medical industry does use different types of medical superglue in place of stitches to close certain types of wounds.

Superglue is made of a substance called cyanoacrylate. When it comes into contact with liquids like water, it forms a plastic mesh that will keep skin, or anything one wants glued, neatly bonded together.

Regular superglue has methyl alcohol, which creates heat in order to produce the bonding effect of superglue.   Using superglue to close a deep tissue wound could result in killing some of the surrounding skin cells.
