What's new at Concord Carpenter?

As I write this I am preparing to go to Channellock Tools for their media event in Meadville, PA. tomorrow.   Channellock Tools was founded in 1886, and is a worldwide leader in the manufacturing of high-quality pliers and assorted hand tools.

I'm a huge fan of Channellock for two reasons; all of their tools are made in the U.S.A, and they do not make junk tools. All of their tools are professional grade with drop-forged, high-carbon C1080 steel.

I'll be posting on Facebook and Twitter from the Channellock plant on Wednesday ~ stay tuned!

Dont forget to enter to win the Irwin Marples Woodworking Chisel Set or the Dewalt Jigsaw - both giveaways are active now!!!

Freeze Proof Outdoor Faucet Goof!

One a recent repair we needed to remove a rotted exterior skirt trim board on a house.  This skirt board had a water spigot installed through the center of it.

We carefully cut away the rotted board and installed a new pvc trim board.   In order to get the board around the faucet we drilled a hole and then cut the board with a saw and then glued the seam around the facuet - worked like a charm.

The problem came later when installing the two faucet mounting screws into the faucet flange.  My guy used a 2.5" screw and installed the screws at an angle.  [photo above]

We found the problem later when the hose was turned on and water was leaking into the basement.  Because the facuet is a freeze proof type the screw hole only leaked when the faucet was turned on.

Had we not noticed this - this may have been a costly mistake.

Here's a tip to prevent this from happening

1.  Take off the handle next time so the screw goes in straight.

2.  Don't use a short screw bit extension because the drill body hits the faucet handle whch makes you angle the screw to install it.

3.  Use a smaller screw to anchored the faucet.

AConcordcarpenter's Survey Results

Thanks to everyone who took my brief survey!

The information gleaned was eye opening and informative and I appreciate the time each and every one of you took to provide me with your feedback.

While I won't bore you with the details I will highlight the results in bullet form below:

  • 68% like the newsletter with no changes while 23% think changes could make it better.
  • 35% of you folks read the newsletter as it comes out.  46% of you only read selected articles.
  • 55% of you want the newsletter to stay weekly, while 23% want bi-monthly and 10% would like to see a monthly e-letter.
  • The good news for me is that 44% find the information useful and 42% sometimes find useful information.  5% of you ONLY read the tool reviews.
Several of you have expressed interest in writing articles for AConcordCarpenter and I will be in touch with each and every one of you soon.   Some of you mentioned that your plumbers or electricians and did not feel your content was relevant.

I disagree and hope you reply to this newsletter with your email address.  I would love to have a licensed plumber and electrician write articles.

Please reply to this email - I want to hear from you!
