What's new at Concord Carpenter?

Hi Folks, Happy Columbus Day.

Columbus Day first became a holiday in 1906 in the state Colorado and elsewhere in1937. On this day people celebrate the 300th anniversary of Columbus landing  in the New World.

This holiday is controversial because there is evidence that the first Europeans to sail across the Atlantic were Viking explorers from Scandinavia.

Columbus Day celebrations are also controversial because the settlement of Europeans in the Americas led to the deaths of a very large number of indiginious native people.

Either way you look at it s just another day of work for me - if your off enjoy it, if your working . . .  be productive!!

 Fall Yard Care:

Fall is fantastic for giving your landscape an edge going into the Spring!

Why plant in the Fall?

  • Cooler air temperatures mean much less stress on the plant and more energy for root establishment.
  • Ground temperatures cool much slower than air temperature in the Fall allowing for a long season of root establishment. [roots will grow as long as soil temperatures stay above 40 temperatures.
  • Ground temperatures takes a long time to warm in the spring meaning root growth and establishment takes far longer in spring than Fall.
  • Natural moisture is more available in Fall for plants allowing for easier establishment in the landscape and less need for gardeners to apply water and weed.
  • Fall planting and establishment  allows plants to grow with far less stress the following spring.

Do You Have Hemlock Trees or Bushes?

If you have Hemlocks in you probably have a woolly adelgid (HWA) infestation and may not know it.  Treatment for the Hemlock Woolly Adelgida varies widely depending upon the size and number of trees to be treated.

If left untreated, a Hemlock infected by woolly adelgid will die.

What is Woolly Adelgid?

Hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) is a fluid feeding insect that was brought into the United States from Asia sometime before 1920.

Once in the United States it became a serious threat to eastern and Carolina Hemlocks and started spreading and is responsible for killings these Hemlocks.
