This week were focused on getting all of our exterior projects finished prior to the weather closing in. Last year we were fortunate to be able to work outside all year long but I've got this strange feeling that we will have too much snow on the ground this year to make that feasible.
Making Your Oscillating Blades Last:
Replacement blades for oscillating tools cost a ton of money - Many folks simply do not use a multi-tool correctly and end up pushing too hard, creating massive heat build up and eventually ruining the blade. The end result is they end up buying more blades than they really need and then complain about it.
Most carpentrer's will say the trick to using an oscillating tools is to allow the weight of the tool to do the cutting and to use light pressure.
The better advice is to apply the correct pressure to the material your cutting and to apply blade movement.
Multi-tools vibrate and have a micro short stroke which by design do not remove waste from the blade kerf. If you rock the tool back and forth, pull the blade out of the kerf or move your cut along a line evenly as well as apply pressure the cut waste will find a way out. This keeps the kerf clean, the blade cooler and lessens the chance for you to burn your blade.
CUTTING TIP - soap, wax or bees wax helps lubricate the blade and reduces friction which causes that nasty blade dulling heat.
What Multi-Tool Blades Am I Using?
I use Bosch and Imperial blades in my multi-tools.
I got turned on to the Bosch multi tool accessory blades when I attended the Bosch 2012 Media Event and had the chance to play around with different accessory blades.
Since then I have developed a few favorites that are worthy of your attention. The Bosch OSC212TC Titanium circular blade for metals and my favorite wood/metal blade, the Bosch OSC212FH Hammerhead plunge blade for wood. This particular Bosch multi-tool blade is exceptionally fast when cutting nail embedded wood.
The Imperial blades I use are better priced, usually by two or three dollars, but they have to be ordered online. Imperial Blades make a huge selection of blades from wood cutting high carbon steel to carbide and diamond marble cutting blades.
