What's new at Concord Carpenter?

Hi guys,

I really hope you had a safe and happy July 4th holiday.  It's Sunday morning and I am sitting outside having my first cup of coffee [we all know that is super important] and listening to my water feature.

Installing a disappearing or hidden-basin water fountain doesn't take up as much space as a waterfall or Koi pond but still gives you the sound of bubbling water and a great looking focal point for your landscape.

With a disappearing fountain, water is pumped through and out a fountain standpipe from a hidden reservoir buried in the ground. The water then overflows the basin rim and seems to disappear into the ground.

Installing a hidden or disappearing water fountain is a great DIY project and a way to add the soothing relaxing sound of moving water to a patio, pool or flower garden area.

I installed my "disappearing fountain" water feature 4 years ago and it is amazing. Everyone who walks into my yard loves it and inquires on how involved it is to make or how much it would cost to have done.

If I had to place a price on this project I'd guess you will spend almost but not quite $1000 plus labor to do it right.  Here's how it's done:  How To Build A Hidden Water Feature

Kids And Pools

Drowning is the number one cause of death for children under five in Florida, Arizona, and California with a ranking of number two for over a dozen other states.

Most of  these unfortunate deaths were preventable.  Nothing beats good adult supervision but as Mr. Murphy [Murphy's Law] taught us "stuff happens."

Help protect your children from drowning by doing the following:

  • Never leave your children alone in or near the pool, even for a moment.
  • Maintain constant eye-to-eye supervision with children in and around the swimming pool and spa.
  • Put up a fence to separate your house from the pool. Most young children who drown in pools wander out of the house and fall into the pool.
  • Install a fence at least 4 feet high around all 4 sides of the pool.
  • Use gates that self-close and self-latch, with latches higher than your children can reach.
  • Keep rescue equipment (such as a hook or life preserver) by the pool.
  • Do not use air-filled swimming aids as a substitute for approved life vests.
  • A power safety cover that meets the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) may add to the protection of your children but should not be used in place of the fence between your house and the pool.
  • Teaching your child how to swim DOES NOT mean your child is safe in water.

Dealing With Dust - Best Practices

As a remodeling contractor I learned early on that learning how to control remodeling dust and keeping out of the non-remodeled portion of your clients home is often more important than the quality of your work.

There is nothing worse than having your client tell you they want you to pay for a professional to remove the plaster dust from inside their baby grand piano.

Over the years I have developed strategies and researched the BEST methods to control remodeling dust.

Part of this strategy is using a dust containment system like ZipWall.  I have been using ZipWall products for four years and would never go back to the old way of doing things.

A few weeks back I mentioned in my newsletter that our lead carpenter Josh was leaving for the police academy.  Well I'm happy to report that Josh is alive and doing well,.  In fact he is a squad leader at the police academy which usually signifies that you are "squared away."

After that newsletter mention Ethan Bickford [photo above] send me an email telling me he was a newsletter subscriber and a fan of Concord Carpenter.

Ethan wanted to work on our team and we hired him!  Last week was Ethan's first full week and I'm happy to report that he is going to fit in just fine on the Concord Carpenter job site!
