What's new at Concord Carpenter?

Hi Guys,

Yesterday Josh started his first day of the police Academy and you could hear the crickets in the workshop here at ACC.

As a result of my last newsletter two very interesting and talented young men have expressed interest in joining the ranks of ACC.  Time will tell if they work out but I have high hopes!!!   In addition to being carpenters both gentlemen are educated, articulate, have photography and writing skills.  What a combination for a remodeling company that has a huge web focus and following.

The bathroom is nearly finish and we are awaiting on some punch list items on the tile and also the glass enclosure install.  I plan on filming at least two more videos on the bathroom series.

The bathroom series was so successful for us here at ACC that it begs the question  what's next?  Maybe a kitchen remodel or a deck build?

A year or two back I surveyed you folks and the majority of you appreciated a weekly newsletter.   While I try to send it out weekly, the reality is only 42 issues a year make it out.    I want to stay relevant and keep the quality of newsletter content up.  Please help me by taking my survey.

 Milwaukee Media Event

Next week I head out to attend the 2013 Milwaukee event.  I'm super excited to learn what Milwaukee has been up to this past year and will be posting "live" on our Facebook page, A Concord Carpenter Comments

Keep an eye out for posts and photos of cool and innovative Milwaukee tool releases.  I will also be posting short videos of these new releases on Concord Carpenter's YouTube Channel.

Bathroom Project: Floor Joists

Contractors may cut through floor joists to accommodate plumbing or HVAC mechanical equipment as long as they properly transfer the floor load to adjoining joists by adding headers.

As a remodeling contractor and carpenter one common structural framing issue I see a lot of in bathroom remodeling jobs are  floor joists that were cut, drilled, notched or need to be cut out to accommodate plumbing pipes and drains.  The time to address these structural issues, like reinforcing floor joists, is at the time it was built or during a retrofit or remodel.

Choosing Bathroom Fixtures:

When choosing bathroom fixtures one of the most important aspects to consider is the quality construction and finish on the product you select.

In the last ten years bathroom fixtures and materials have changed dramatically.   Energy efficiency has become a focus with companies producing more efficient flushing toilets, faucets and shower heads.

The products and fixtures you choose for your bathroom will ultimately determine how the room  will function and taking the time to research quality products will pay you dividends with longevity of you purchase.

How To Build A Hidden Water Fountain

I get lots of emails on this article and it's worth mentioning it every Spring as folks are moving outdoors.

Installing a disappearing or hidden-basin water fountain gives you the sound of bubbling water and a great looking focal point for your landscape.

With a disappearing fountain, water is pumped through and out a fountain standpipe from a hidden reservoir buried in the ground. The water then overflows the basin rim and seems to disappear into the ground.

Installing a hidden or disappearing water fountain is a great DIY project and a way to add the soothing relaxing sound of moving water to a patio, pool or flower garden area

ZIP WALL SAVES ME TIME AND MONEY

Part of any professional project starts wirth protecting the rest of the house not being remodeled from dust and damage.  This includes having an effective dust control strategy.

I've had such a great response from my clients on our ZipWall dust containment strategies that I'm considering adding a line item to my contract that details our efforts and the value of it!

Tool Reviews:

This week there are a couple of great reviews on my site AConcordCarpenter.  Check them out if you get the chance!

DEWALT DCL040 20 Volt LED Flashlight.

My name is Rob Robillard and I love lumens.  There I said it.

I have a flashlight in every drawer, vehicle, several toolboxes, on my tool belt and in my drill / impact driver case.  The light in my tool drill / driver case is a DEWALT DCL040 20 Volt LED Flashlight.

Did you know DEWALT has Mechanics Tool Sets?

DEWALT has released a slew of mechanics tools ranging from wrenches to socket sets. While not an everyday go-to tool for a carpenter I do have my fair share of mechanic sets.

We mostly use them for demo work, repairing equipment / tools and installing mechanical fasteners requiring carriage bolt applications.

Let's face it all tradesmen carry mechanic sets!

Bosch Grinders

I've always believed that you should focus on one product and make it well as opposed to offering numerous versions of the same product.  When folks do that quality often suffers.  I say this every time I walk into the Cheesecake Factory restaurant and look at their 15 page food packed menu, it's way too big .  Focus - folks - focus!!!!

Well Bosch has recently completely overhauled their grinder line-up and now presents customers with eleven tools to choose from: four slide switch grinders and seven paddle switch grinders.  I may be wrong on my Cheesecake theory!

What do you think?
