What's New At Concord Carpenter?

Hi Guys,

That oppressive heat wave and oppressive humidity finally broke today and I'm sitting on my screen porch and actually enjoying sitting outside.
The Concord Carpenter crew worked thru this past heat wave but you could definitly see it took a toll on us as well as the progress of our work.   It was plain miserable!

We are converting a covered porch into a mudroom and decided to completely rebuild the porch joist system due to it being only 2x6.  We opted to use 2x10 and a triple beam so we could install 10" of insulation in the floor.
To keep critters, drafts and help hold the insulation in we applied 1/2 pressure treated plywood to the bottom.  There was barely enough room for me to squeeze in there to fasten the plywood.

Adding the plywood alone does not keep all of the drafts out and will not prevent air leaks so we foam sealed the sill at the house and the new deck ledger and rim joists.

We also sealed all of the inside seams of the plywood prior to applying insulation inside the joist bays.

When this project is complete there will be a stucco skirt wall covering this crawl space.  this will further keep critters and drafts out of the floor system.

The room has no heat and adding to the existing system would be too costly and difficult.    to heat this room we will be using a Warmly Yours Radiant heating system under the tile.

The science behind electric radiant floor heating is quite simple: the entire floor surface effectively becomes a low temperature radiator.

These electric heat systems deliver heat through heat transfer: the delivery of heat directly from the heat source to the floor surface and objects in the room via infrared radiation from underneath, which in turn warms the people and objects in the room.

Floor heat is much more efficient  and comfortable than heating the air which does not retain that heat for very long. Unlike forced air heating systems, under-floor heating warms your body and the objects surrounding you rather than heating the air, ultimately eliminating inconsistent room temperatures and reducing the percentage of dust mites to 80%.

We will also be installing a snow melt system under this clients Blue-stone walkway.  his is a fun project and one that we decided to make into a  video series.  See Video part 1 here:  Installing A Snow Melt System - Video Series Part 1

Concord Carpenter Abroad

Next week I travel to England to watch my daughter play in a soccer tournament and sight see around London and even visit France for two days.  It should be a fun filled adventure - especially since I am renting a car and have never driven on the opposite side of the road before.  Wish me luck.

There will be no newsletter next week.

How's This for A Picture On Your Morning Walk

Last week I mentioned that my middle daughter is in Africa.  She took these pictures while on a walk.   WOW!

She's having a great time and will join us in London at the end of the week.

 Concord Carpenter's Weekly Photo

No this is not our new employee interrogation chair.

The photo above is a kitchen bar stool that a friend / client fell in love with but was saddened to learn it was too high to comfortably sit under her island counter overhang.

We love solving problems and make a simple jig to cut her legs down 4 inches.  When cutting chair legs you need to be consistent, concise and exact or you'll have a rocking chair!

See how we did it here on our video:  Cutting Chair Legs

Our newest addition to the Concord Carpenter team, Ethan Bickford, is currently writing a how-to article on how to quickly and easily make these two seams flush.

Can you guess how he does it????
