Hi Guys,
Last week we tore off the roof of the telescope observatory project and realized that certain structural framing members that should have been in place we not. So we dealt with that and this week we are buttoning up the exterior.
Below is a CAD drawing showing the Telescope dome and structure.
It's been a fun and unique project so I thought I'd share some pictures with you.
Below we removed the old gable roof and reinforced the walls and ceiling below.
Rafters cut [right] and ceiling joists floating [left - supported below by a temp. wall.
Roof removed, the rafters on right cutback and secured. Floor joists sistered with LVLs and carried by structural framing beams.
Time to insulate and install sub-floor.
Impact drivers made easy work when installing Timberloks and Trus Lok into the all LVL roof system.
Plywood covers the octagon where the dome will sit. The dome is a few weeks away [being built in Germany] and once it arrives we will cut the plywood out.
Carrying Sheet Goods - TIP!
Everyone on the job site got a kick out of seeing me do that so I figured I'd share it here.
I've been doing this for awhile as its safer and easier on my body. "Work smarter not harder, right?"
Using a large C-Clamp allows one person to lift and carry heavy sheet goods from the top, with much less strain and greatly reduced risk of injury to the back, neck, shoulders, arms & hands!
The C-clamp works by clamping onto the top of the material, creating a sturdy temporary handle for the person who is carrying them. It allows the user to lift and move them with a straight back, eliminating the requirement of bending over to get under the bottom, thus avoiding the torqued back and the aches and pains that are far too familiar to construction workers and do-it-yourselfers.
How To Build A Torsion Box Bookcase Seat
When designing an aircraft, it's all about finding lightweight and
strong material that is stiff enough to withstand the exceptional forces
under which it has to operate.
Durability is an important factor especially when the wings come into when building long bookcase seats - learn how we use airplane technology in our bookcase.

Festool Router OF1400 EQ Review
We recently reviewed the Festool Router # OF1400 EQ. It's a 1-3/4
HP motor puts out 1400 watts or 11.7 AMPs.
This router is the
workhorse, general purpose router of the Festool line. The mid-range
router that's big enough to handle some tough jobs but still light
enough to handle some of the more delicate routing tasks.

Hart Mattock HHM5LB
We like to ham it up for the camera at ACC. How'd you like to have this guy greet you at the door on Halloween???
It's nice to see a company bringing some new features to old tools that
haven't seen a lot of attention or innovation. A lot of companies have just slapped a
fiberglass handle onto an old-school mattock head but Hart refined a
staple digging tool in some
really thoughtful ways.
Stanley Utility Mats
I have a love hate relationship with my
workshop. While I love using my hands to make bookcases, mantles and
other built-ins I had what the long hours of standing do to my legs,
joints and lower back.
My shop floor is concrete and when standing in the shop working for long period, my feet and lower back ache.
I recently decided to try out the Stanley Utility Mat.
Here's what I thought.
