What's new at Concord Carpenter
We started the Telescope Dome Project this week - its going to be an interesting and fun project to write about. Watch for it in the coming weeks. We'll be posting pics on Facebook and Twitter daily.
We've been busy banging nails as well as the keyboard. Included below is a section of our most recent articles full of new tools and interesting building articles - click the link and check them out!
Do you remember last March I spoke at and presented the 2013 NELMA Sustainable Versatility Design Awards?
NELMA [Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association] sponsors the award to celebrate the future of building and designing with one of North America's most historic species, Eastern White Pine.
Well it's time for the 2014 Sustainable Versatility Design Awards which is a no-fee competition available exclusively for architecture and design students enrolled in accredited universities in North America.
The award is based on a design using Eastern White Pine, traditionally associated with an authentic, rustic design aesthetic. More and more, architects and designers are incorporating this species into modern settings, blending Eastern White Pine's unique character with modern building materials like glass and steel. Today, Eastern White Pine is transcending its reputation for residential construction.
The 2014 NELMA Design Challenge:
Incorporate the use of Eastern White Pine in a light commercial construction project set in an urban environment. Examples include banks, community centers, coffee houses, schools, houses of worship, restaurants, theaters, shopping areas, office buildings and much more.
Prizes include cash, a trip to Boston, a trophy, and unlimited bragging rights.
Considerations, requirements, judging criteria and all deadlines are at www.sustainableversatility.com.

Milwaukee M12 LED Stick Light:
My name is Rob and I love lumen! ~ There I said it.
More recently I've become a lover of light-emitting diode bulbs or
LED bulbs. Before we go any further you need to know that alot of lumen
with little lux equals a poor lighting experience. Which means that
not every LED light source is the same. READ REVIEW HERE

Milwaukee Hollow Core Nut Driver Review:
Why didn't I think of this?
All I know is when I grow up I want to work with Tim Albrecht [VP Hand Tools] and his merry band of hand tool designers!!!!
Milwaukee Tool continues to research common job-site frustrations and deliver solutions.
The Milwaukee HollowCore Nut Drivers feature a thread -thru design,
that allows the driver to be used at an unlimited depth on threaded rod
applications and when fastening two nuts on long bolts. Just think of
how handy this tool will be when installing uni-strut.
How To Make A Crown Molding Jig:
To make cutting crown go easier and have more accurate miter cuts I constructed a crown molding jig for my
miter saw.
This jig allows me to place the crown molding snug in the jig,
which allowed me to focus on the cut as opposed to straining to hold the
molding still.
Concord Carpenter's Photo Of The Week
This photo is of a mudroom project we just completed.
The interesting thing about this window is that it used to be an exterior window.
We cut off the exterior sill and trimmed the window to look like and interior window. Now this window is trimmed on both sides and allows light to pass from room to room.
Fall Leaf Removal Tips
When to remove leaves
Leaves need to be removed in the fall because they block the sun - an
essential ingredient to maintaining growth and development of the lawn's root
system. In the cooler months, the lawn is making food to store in the
root system so that it can continue to grow underground in the dormant season.
It is recommended that you remove leaves weekly so that the lawn isn't
deprived of sunlight.
While raking is the most common method, there are alternatives. You can
use a leaf blower or attach a material collection or mulching system to your
mower to make the job easier.
Mulching
Riding lawn mowers with mulching decks chop up leaves and blow them
back into the turf. This has the benefit of not only taking the work out of
leaf removal, but the mulched leaves provide a nutrient-rich boost to the
soil.
Composting
Composting is the breaking down of organic matter for use as
fertilizer in the future. Anyone can build a compost pile in their yard or buy
one at a local hardware store. If you build one, it should be three feet
in diameter and four feet high in order to build up hot internal temperature
that gets the material "cooking."
It is recommended that you fertilize it
with 10 parts each of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. Compost piles can be
made of any organic materials like leaves, grass clippings, straw and other
disease-free vegetable material.
