What's new at Concord Carpenter
I'm still recovering from foot surgery. These past few days I've been able to gingerly slip on a loose, untied boot. Things are looking up for my foot and work!!!
I've been using my downtime to generate carpentry and remodeling work during this slow winter month as well as work on my 2014 media guide for my website.
Temperatures in the Northeast and elsewhere have been frigid and many nights have dipped into the negative temperatures. I recorded -11 degrees overnight Saturday, on my home thermometer, and saw -7 degrees that morning in my truck.
As a result many people are experiencing frozen pipes and heating issues. This newsletter is dedicated to that problem.
Preventing Frozen Pipes
Preventing pipes from freezing is BEST done at the time of construction not
after the pipes freeze. A well thought out building envelope keeps
pipes on interior walls and in condition spaces.
Pipe freezing is a particular problem when pipes are run through outside
walls, uninsulated or under insulated attics or crawl spaces or have cold air blowing across them.
Suggestions:
- Seal off all drafts in basement
- Insulate pipes near outer walls
- Insulate basement rim joist
- Keep your heat to a minimum of 55 degrees, higher in water pipes are in exterior walls
- Leave bath and kitchen sink cabinet doors open
- Let faucets on exterior walls drip slowly
- Install heat tapes on vulnerable pipes
- add heat to problem areas
- Consider re-routing troublesome pipes
- Keep shower valves on interior walls and pitch piping to shower head [see video for explanation.]

Frozen Shower Pipe Problem and Resolution
A client of mine had a recurring problem with their master
bathroom shower pipes freezing. One obvious issue with this shower was located above a
garage [heated] and the water pipes are in a corner with two cold walls
and a cold roof.
Numerous fixes by other contractors did not stop the freezing. We tore into the walls to diagnose this problem and fixed it once and for all.
