What's new at Concord CarpenterHi Guys,
What does an English Tying Joint, Story Poles, Lasers and Heated Jackets have in common?
While you can make an argument that the English tying joint, the story pole and maybe the lasers could be used together, the answer correct is this newsletter!
This week we are gearing up to work in a very nicely built timber framed pool house. The owner architect not only has very cool tastes but is talented and easy to work with. A definite plus when working for an architect.
Look at the photo above, you gotta love that rafter to ridge beam joint!
Part of this project will involve framing two changing rooms, one with a composting toilet, a built-in custom cabinets, a sink base that will get have a custom concrete counter top, a pantry area with built in cabinets / shelves a fridge and a dryer.
Plus more.
The photo above shows the area where the changing rooms, composting toilet and dryer will go. All of the partition walls and custom cabinetry will be finished in unpainted, rough-sawn boards similar to the wall and roof sheathing shown in these pictures.
Maybe I'll post an elevation drawing next week to give you an idea of the desired finished look.
Today was spent making story poles and laying out elevations and the changing room walls. One technique that I often use when laying out walls is the 3-4-5 Method For Squaring Corners.
The photo below shows an "English Tying Joint" which is arguably the MOST important joint in timber framing.
The English Tying Joint unites the vertical post, horizontal
wall plate, and rafter into one joint. An ingenious joint in use since medieval times and still effective today!
Using A Story Pole:
A story pole is a length of narrow board, often a 1×2, usually cut to
the height of a floor height or a "story." It is a layout tool for
measuring, marking and transferring accurate measurements.
Early carpenters relied on story poles for building all sorts of things and used it to measure and mark heights from the floor platform of a building and up.
Measurements like window sill heights, window top heights (or
headers), exterior door heights (or headers), interior door heights,
etc., were all recorded on the story pole.
The story pole is a permanent way to mark and layout for an accurate quick and easy recall.
I was taught to use story poles when building custom bookcases and
built ins. It eliminates the tape measure, is more accurate than paper
and once marked can be used throughout the project to continually check
your progress.
