What's new at Concord Carpenter

Hi Guys,
We are changing gears here at ACC and are preparing to do a year long series of "head to head tool reviews, ten in total.  If you have a tool you'd like to see in a head to head - reply to this email.

Over the next few weeks we will be gearing up comparing the top 18v and 36v cordless circular saws [wood cutting] in two separate head to head comparisons. The article would promote the advantages of cordless circular saws and highlight each model for leading in the following categories.

  • Power
  • Battery Life
  • Dealing with Overload
  • Battery Charge Time
  • Number of Batteries needed to work ALL day
  • Standard Circ Saw/Tool Features
The TOP three saws will also be written up as separate reviews and linked to in the head to head for readers to learn more about the saw.

Standard saw/tool features would include a subjective comparison of:
  • Ergonomics
  • Site
  • Bevel
  • Settings
  • Markings (Knobs, Settings, 90-degree Line, 45-degree Line)
  • Durability
  • Ease of Use
  • Overall look and feel of tools
  • Unique Features
  • Price Point
  • Accessories
Companies and Models we are considering for the 18 v Head to Head are:
  • Dewalt
  • Bosch
  • Hilti
  • Makita
  • Metabo
  • Milwaukee
  • Ridgid
Did I miss anyone???

Cold Weather Is Good Reason to Stay In ACC Shop

With the freezing temperatures we've had plenty of time to finish up tool reviews and film the videos for them in the ACC shop.

This weekend we got a few done, see below:

HUSQVARNA 130BT Back Pack Blower.

When you hear someone say, "that blows," on the job site it's usuallynot a good thing.  I should qualify that by saying that it is usually is not a good thing unless your talking about the Husqvarna 130BT Backpack Blower

Milwaukee M18 Job-site Radio

We had a lot of fun making this video.

Unfortunately we learned after processing the M18 video that my ceiling microphone battery was dead.  Urrrgggghhh!  I sure wish camera equipment batteries came with fuel gauges like the cordless tools we use!

None-the-less this Milwaukee M18 Radio kicks ass and we did have fun making the video

WINNER!  Milwaukee M18Radio

We have a winner for the Milwaukee M18 Job-site Radio with blue-tooth technology.

Joe Savage, a finish carpenter, from Elizabeth, NJ won.  Joe is an experienced carpenter who reads our ACC newsletter.

Joe is a finish carpenter, mostly self-employed, and also a cabinet installer for companies doing business in NYC.  He also runs interior renovation crews as a lead carpenter/site supervisor doing layout to completion.

Joe has a small shop in his garage where he'll be using the radio.

Joe told me while he's not on Facebook but he does watch the ACC tool reviews on Youtube and appreciates our honesty when reviewing tools.

Thanks for the comment Joe and enjoy the radio!

3-4-5 Method For Squaring Corners

Carpentry is not an exact science; it is a pragmatic approach to problem solving, building and repairing. My experience has taught me that a few basic principles guide us on what will or will not work. Plumb, Level and Square, is some of those principles.

Rolair JC10 compressor

In the sea of features and considerations, sometimes you have to boil down a tool to a few features. When it comes to compressors, three things often jump out to me about any model.

  • Size
  • Reliability
  • Noise Level

Personal Safety and Risk Reduction

If you have followed the ACC website or this newsletter you know that I am a big proponent of personal safety.  I've been a self-defense instructor and RAD instructor and as a father of three children I do my fair share of worrying.

In our article:  Staying Safe in an Unsafe World we give you some tips and a gentle reminder that there are no guarantees with anything.

No one can say that physical defense is always the absolute right option in every situation. There is also no fighting style or technique that is completely "Un-defeatable."
