Rob and Phil face on the the OMT Head-2-Head Testing!

What's New at Concord Carpenter?

This past weekend, the ACC Crew, got together with Todd Fratzel and ToolBoxBuzz and performed did two Head-2-Head tests on corded jigsaws and oscillating multi-tools.  The weather could not have been perfect in fact, I got a sunburn!

A BIG thanks to Lenox and Bosch for supplying all of the jig saw and OMT blades for these two tests.

A lot of time and effort go into these tests, from analyzing the results and test data, to editing the photos and video footage.  Watch for the results of both these tests in two weeks.  I have put in some sneak peek photos and information below, check it out!

Let's talk clamps!    Clamps are fastening devices to hold or secure objects tightly together to prevent movement or separation through the application of inward pressure, so you can complete construction and repair jobs with confidence.

Recently I had a rustic cabinet door project and had some issues with my shaper table clamps slipping.   I ended up swapping out the old clamps with newer Bessey Auto -Adjusting Toggle Clamps, problem solved!

BESSEY Auto-Adjust Toggle Clamps

When it comes to efficiently and productivity in the shop, or on a job site, nothing beats tools and jigs that free your hands up and make your work safer and more accurate. In most all cases great jigs involve some sort of clamping device.

BESSEY introduced a new line of auto adjusting clamps that I has my attention.
Today's newsletter is focused on these auto-adjusting clamps because you can NEVER have enough clamps and they solve shop and fabrication problems!

Who is Bessey?

Bessy has been making clamps since 1936, is well known and has set the benchmark for clamping in the woodworking and fabrication industry.

I've been using Bessey clamps in the shop for many years because they work!

Time Saved is Money Earned!

These new clamps are strong, reliable, safe and save time.   Bessey is leading the way in the industry with their newly patented auto-adjust toggle clamps that automatically adjust to the work piece dimensions while maintaining constant clamping force.

In my shop I have a collection of these clamps for jig making and appreciate the fact that they are designed for constant loads and daily use.   Having the ability to adjust the clamping force as needed at set-up time is a HUGE time saver and safety feature.

A Clamp for Every Need

Bessey recently released five new configurations improving the auto-adjust toggle clamp.  I'm still trying to find ways to use all of them!  Three additional horizontal toggle clamps in a more compact format:

  • One of which has a horizontal base plate,
  • One with a vertical base plate
  • One with a 90° angled base plate.
  • The inline clamp range has also been expanded with two compact models:
  • One model with a horizontal base plate
  • One with a 90° angled base plate.

The new Auto-Adjust Toggle clamps also include detailing improvements such as:

  • Full 90° open angle
  • Oil-resistant two-component plastic grip
  • Larger grips on the more compact models
  • Anti-slide device
  • Lever stop
  • Rotating pressure plate with removable protective cap (instead of a screw with a rubber stopper)
  • Flexible base plate hole pattern that is suitable for standard dimensioning in millimeters and inches.

Whether you're building an heirloom grandfather clock or parts for a custom hot rod, custom jigs are essential to the process. The new line of Bessey auto-adjust toggle clamps can improve your jigs by making them quicker to set up and durable enough to last for years to come.

Testing cut quality in laminate

Corded jig Saw Head-2-Head Test:

A jig saw is a hand held power tool that utilizes a reciprocating blade to cut material.  The reciprocating blade moves up and down and allows it's user to be able to make very tight turns when cutting.

Ethan the "story behind the lens !"

Jigsaw puzzles get their name from the jig saw puzzle since they were once made of wood and required complex cuts to create.

Jigsaws are an amazing tool. No other one tool can crosscut; bevel cut, miter, and make a plunge cut and scrolling curved cuts with the precision of a jigsaw

Where did the Jig Saw come from?

The jigsaw design started in 1946 when Albert Kaufmann, an engineer  of Scintilla AG company,  installed a blade on his wife's sewing machine almost half a century ago, the idea for a jig saw was born.

The very first portable jig saw was introduced in 1947.

In 1947, after development of Kaufmann's invention, Scintilla started producing jigsaws under name "Lesto jigsaw".  In 1954 Bosch acquired Scintilla and in 1964 the name "Lesto" was replaced with Bosch.

Cordless Oscillating Multi-tool Head-2-Head Test:

Whether corded or cordless, an oscillating multi-tool vibrates a blade or other attachment back and forth in a narrow arc (3-4°) at up to 21,000 strokes per minute.

Because of the tool's short range of blade motion, small front-end profile, and blades that extend past the "working-end" of the tool, it reaches into tight spots other tools can't.

A multi-tool also works well for flush cutting because the stepped profile of many blades and other attachments allows the attachment to rest flat on a surface.

Carpenter's Tip

Finish trim can make a big impact in a room with a small time and money investment.  changing out a door head casing can make a huge impact.

Many times carpenters will substitute small crown molding instead of using a solid molding.  See how we did it.
