Concord Carpenter Workshop News
Hi Guys,
WOW what a crazy weekend. Ive been to a funeral, graduation party and a wedding all in 48 hours.
Unfortunately I Iost a friend to ALS [Lou Gehrig's Disease] this week. At 58 years old he was far too young and will be missed by many. His passing has caused me to look at my life. Life is certainly fragile!
Perhaps Steve Job's said it best,
"No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to
die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one
has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because death is very
likely the single best invention of life. It is life's change agent."
Sometimes we manage to take things for granted -- actually,
society manages to take everything for granted. We have become a
society that has forgotten the true value of life and how special it
really is. It's too often that we take things, people, life included, for
granted each and everyday.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also commonly known as Lou
Gehrig's Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes
muscle weakness, paralysis, and ultimately, respiratory failure.
There are an estimated 450,000 people worldwide living with ALS. Most people with ALS
only live 2-5 years after their first signs of disease.
Currently, there is only a single medicine for specifically treating
ALS - riluzole. This drug, extends survival about 2 to 3 months.

Refrigerator Warning Signs
The refrigerator is an appliance we all have. Many small problems
can be tackled by anyone with basic handyman skills. One of the easiest and BEST maintenance
tasks you can do on your refrigerator is to clean your condenser coils.
Dusty condenser coils cause a refrigerator to work harder; which
translates into bigger energy bills and a shorter life expectancy for
the fridge - not good.
Call the repairman when:
-
You hear a slight hissing noise and the refrigerator is not cooling as efficiently as it has been.
-
You feel an oily residue on the floor of the freezer compartment.
-
An accident results in the condenser coils being damaged.
-
The appliance is leaking significant amounts of water and you can't locate the source of the leak.
-
The outer shell of the refrigerator is sweating.
-
Unit continues to cycle on and off even after you have cleaned the condenser coils.

A miter saw that is adjusted and set up
properly will give incredibly accurate cuts. Adding a zero clearance
plate and tuning up your saws is an easy upgrade. Here's how we did it on our miter saw
How To Build A Raised Garden Bed
Spring has arrived and as the days grow longer it's time to move
outdoors and work in the yard. We recently have been doing more and more
lawn and garden articles and thought that writing an article on how to
make a raised garden bed dovetailed nicely between gardening and
carpentry.
A raised garden can be used to plan vegetables, herbs, flowers or house perennial plantings.
