Five Minutes with...
Question 1
What has been your biggest challenge in business and how did you overcome it?
I had no network. Dark chocolate and hiding under my doona seemed like a
smart strategy when I first arrived from Canada. After a box of Kleenex, I knew I
needed help. I hired a coach from back home to focus my efforts. He said 'Meet
100 people fast."
I went to events, joined a choir, made cold calls and took
professional coaching with the gifted Desley Lodwick of Peppered Moth. Soon
I'll have my Master's Professional Coaching Accreditation. I also started inviting
positive professionals to my free monthly BRANDfluence seminar. When you
freely give value you build relationships of value. Every piece of my business this
year has come from these free events.
Question 2
If you had to start your business again from scratch, what would you do differently?
See above - answers apply to both
Question 3
Who do you admire and why?
My super hero was my dad. The man looked like Santa Claus. I remember
holding his hand and walking into his customer's culinary shop when I was five.
They were so happy to see him. He made everyone feel special. I can still see
the morning sun streaming onto his bed the day he died. With his last exhale he
whispered 'Take care and love everyone.'
Question 4
If takes a lot of determination and dedication to succeed in
business. What keeps you motivated?
Motivation comes and goes like Melbourne weather. Good habits unlock the
door to success. What business activities can you do daily and monthly? I take
daily business Vitamin Cs to Cultivate relationships. I do a mix of having a
Conversation, Click and share value through an email, make a Call or send a
Card. Every 30 days, I do two marketing events: I give a free seminar and go to a
new networking event.
If motivation is a problem that's a sign that something is wrong. I've coached a lot
of clients to find their right livelihood or shift their business. When you've found
what you love you don't need motivation. You need a good business strategy, a
strong brand and people who believe in you when the demons of doubt are biting
you in the assets.
Question 5
What are your biggest success tips?
- Figure out what you value and want. Every day I write out how I
want to be and what I want to my life to be. This is one of my
spiritual and business practices.
- Surround yourself with the best. I studied and worked with Richard
Bolles the author of the world's best selling career book What Color
Is Your Parachute. His brilliance and humility shaped who I am. He
taught me to seek out true masters.
- Toss the TV. Billions are spent on the 'boob tube' to make women feel
bad. Leaders are readers. Tune into what matters. Find the five best
authors in your field and eat 'em up.
- Be a Go Giver - When you go to meetings, go to give not to get. Figure
out how you can add value. What can you share, teach or give?
- Be Great in Bed. If you manage a business and a relationship, it's
important to know what separates the relationship disasters from the
masters. Check out the writings of Drs John and Julie Gottman. They are
the world's top relationship experts. Happy wife equals happy life.
