A few days later, we got news that Gary Wright of "Dream Weaver" fame and Smash Mouth lead singer Steve Harwell also died. Smash Mouth is best known for "All Star," a song we were surprised to learn has nothing to do with sports. It was written by the band's guitarist, Greg Camp, who told us it was inspired by letters (actual letters - with stamps) the band got from fans who felt like outcasts but found solace in Smash Mouth's music. Camp described it as "Like a daily affirmation... an uplifting, self-confidence building song."
