Sleeping Child
- of the week -
"Thank you so much for the sleep plan. It was a huge help! It took several weeks to get him completely falling asleep on his own (mostly because we weren't able to be consistent with my husband putting him to sleep due to coaching our older kids' baseball teams), but Silas is now 15 months old and has been falling asleep on his own
at naps and bedtime AND sleeping through the night for a few months now! We didn't even have to sleep train in the night - he just started doing it on his own. Your plan was just what we needed.
Â
...Thanks for all you guys do - such a valuable service. I've been referring you to so many people since we saw such great results. I'm also a childbirth educator and doula, and I have been recommending you guys to all my students/clients and friends that get in touch with me about difficult sleep
issues."

Q: Hello, I don't know what else to do. My 14 month old gets up a couple times a night. Sometimes I just lay him back and he will sleep and most times he wants me to pick him up to sleep!!! The cry it out method hasn't worked; he can cry for
hours. I don't know what else to try. He naps at least once during the day. Plz help lol -Mandy
Â
A: The cry it out method can be quick and effective for some babies and toddlers, but doesn't work for every child and it's impossible to predict whether it will work with yours until you try it. Our first approach with many of the families with which we work is a
gentler and more gradual approach to changing your child's habits and expectations. It will possible work better for your toddler's temperament and personality even if it may take a little longer than the 2-3 days (though not always) that cry it out advocates tend to tout. While we can't promise zero crying, it's better to TEACH your child what to do and expect before we have him do it alone. Also, keep in mind that if something else is fundamentally wrong in your toddler's schedule, feeding, or routines, no amount of crying will "fix" it. It's best to have a holistic approach to fixing sleep problems, which is what we use. Good luck, Mandy!

Hello,
Â
I was talking to a mom who was my client-turned-employee, and she was commenting on how she remembers one holiday being stuck in a dark room trying to get her daughter to go to sleep for hours. She had missed the family meal and her mom brought her food in the room so she could eat in the dark with the baby on her lap. I remember days like that, too. Another mom I know remembers eating
a holiday meal while bouncing on a yoga ball, trying to get her son to sleep! As we gear up for Thanksgiving here in the U.S., if you find yourself in a dark room, putting the baby to bed for hours while the rest of the guests are enjoying good food and lively conversation, know that you are NOT alone and that other parents are doing the same thing! Hopefully, though, you will all have sleeping babies by Christmas (we can help with that!). Hang in there, and Happy early Thanksgiving from my
family to yours!
Â
I hope reading through our weekly newsletter has helped you realize that you are not alone, and that there is hope, and a light at the end of the tunnel. Forward this to a friend, so they know they're not alone, either!
