Millionaire Chess 3

As it's looking more and more as though Millionaire Chess 3 will be the last one, I want to deeply thank my partner Amy Lee for being such an amazing blessing to chess. To have such a rock of support is more than I could have asked for. ~ GM Maurice Ashley on twitter

   Answer below.

I just got back from Millionaire Chess 3 in Atlantic City, New Jersey!

I've been to all three Millionaire events now.  The first two were held at the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, and this one was at the Harrah's casino in Atlantic City.

Here is my newsletter from last year's MC2 http://archive.aweber.com/tacticstime/Bp8_H/h/Tactics_Time_Chess_Newsletter.htm and here is my newsletter from 2014's MC1 in case you missed it: http://archive.aweber.com/tacticstime/G.NX1/h/Tactics_Time_Newsletter_.htm

I had never been to Atlantic City before, and I really liked it.  The Harrah's casino resort was very nice, and I liked how it was right on the water.

This year the tournament scaled way back on all of the over the top extras that were in the first two Millionaire tournaments.  No more pool parties, massages, confession booths, VIP lounges, live commentary, girls serving water to the players, etc.  This was perfectly understandable as the tournament has taken huge financial losses, and the attendance has been underwhelming.

The tournament hall still had a very nice look and feel, and the rounds all started on time.  Before the first round, they even had a professional opera singer (who is also a chess player) do the National Anthem, which was incredible.

GM Maurice Ashley gave lectures on both Saturday and Sunday morning, which were incredible.  I love the way he looks at the game, and describes it.  He makes great analogies, and is very entertaining.

You can see some great photos of the event on the Millionaire Chess facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/millionairechess/  The photos are taken by David Llada, who had a really nice article in the latest Chess Life magazine.  I spoke with David during the event, and he told me he was very flattered by the article.

You can check out https://millionairechess.com/ today, October 10th, for the "Millionaire Monday" coverage (basically playoffs to determine the winners).

It sounds like this is going to be the last Millionaire Chess tournament, which I think is a shame.  I know that the organizers Amy Lee and Maurice Ashley worked incredibly hard to make this concept work.  I thank them for their efforts in promoting chess!

   Answer:

   22. Nxf6! and checkmate cannot be stopped.

   If 22...Bxf7 or 22...Qxf7 then 23. Qxh7#

If 22...Rg7, which is what happened in the game, 23. Qxh7+ with an Arabian mate to follow 23...Rxh7 24. Rxh7#

   Happy Tactics!
