I sometimes play action movies in the background while writing this Newsletter. Today, it was the 2014 Godzilla reboot.

I haven't watched it in a few years, even though it's one of my favorite franchise reboots.

I kept getting distracted by the filmmakers' use of light and silhouette for each creature's reveal.  Not just that, it's how each of those reveals are dynamic, constantly pulling your eye through sweeping shadows without an edit - and then light morphs the image. I had forgotten about those shots. Tons of fun.

And now that I've written this, it would be inconsiderate not to share the FXGuide look at this film.

Anyway...

Enjoy this week's Newsletter!

Happy Grading! I'll see you next Sunday.

Sincerely,

Patrick Inhofer

Featuring the work of creative craftsmen, the theory of color, and industry news. Learn practical workflows, useful theories, and actionable insights from existing (and emerging) leaders and teachers in our industry.

"FilmLight has unveiled the nominees for the 2022 FilmLight Colour Awards. In their second year, the awards have attracted over 300 entries from 36 countries across the globe and the judging panel has now announced a shortlist of 25 remarkable projects across five categories."

"You might’ve seen a brouhaha over the quote-unquote “fact” that Pantone has “copyrighted colors.” They’re forcing Adobe to pay them oodles of money for color swatches, and Adobe said “no you.” Now users have to pay $15 a month just to use COLORS?" Full details at the link.

(video) Colorist Newsletter contributor-at-large Marc Wielage writes in, "[This is] a fascinating 2-hour lecture about “The Language of Color,” basically a primer on the aesthetics of judging light, contrast, hue, and saturation as it applies to the real world and what can be photographed. Not software-specific, more an overall examination of color theory, how emotion is portrayed through color, and so on."

"The report shows a record of 12 IMAX DNA titles expected for 2022 Blockbuster, and the heavy film slate continues into 2023. ‘Filmed for IMAX’ and the new fleet of cameras will strengthen that even further."

What's interesting here is later in the article, it describes how IMAX manages its licensed cinemas.

I'm including this item specifically for the comment (in the last paragraph) about the team's desire to do a film-out - and the tradeoff that they weren't willing to make.

(video) Because a good professional colorist should understand the fundamentals of related crafts: "Solid audio can make or break the effectiveness of storytelling. Learn how Diegetic and Non-Diegetic sound can help craft your film."

"Shooting plates seem to be a simple process. The challenge is mainly focused on choosing the right cameras, and lenses, and assembling the rig. However, which is preferred? Shooting with an array of cinema cameras, or with one camera and an ultra-wide cinema lens? Here are some insights."

I hadn't been following this story too closely. But after the ban recently went into effect, I dug around for an article explaining the concerns. This is what I quickly found, October 2021.

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.

(video) A comment sums this up: "And, somehow, he managed to do a Halloween-themed restoration video. What a legend."

This is definitely fun for a client presentation space: "German TV maker Loewe's new OLED TVs are made from a solid mineral material called syno-stone that is durable and non-porous."

Some people will not find this very funny. Or fun.

Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you next Sunday.
