Halloween is behind us, and in the States, Thanksgiving is right around the corner. We're officially entering the Holiday season.

Early in the life-cycle of this Newsletter, I used to have a section dedicated to gifts for colorists and post-professionals. I'd add ideas each week, growing the list until the New Year.

I've decided to bring that section back this year, just before the Sunday Fun(nies).

As you run across fun ideas for giving (or splurging on yourself), feel free to send them to me, and I'll add them to this growing list. The first item for this holiday season is especially fun, so scroll down and click through to get a sense of the spirit.

Happy Grading! I'll see you next Sunday.

Sincerely,

Patrick Inhofer
Publisher/Colorist

"Patrick Renner, Pomfort’s Co-founder and Head of Product, was among this year’s honorees, receiving a medal award for his work on Livegrade!" Congratulations!

"Developed in partnership with the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) ...You’ll improve your ability to discuss the technical aspects of moving pictures and help your company be more effective in acquiring, optimizing, monitoring and displaying those images."

Via Marc Wielage: "Not often you see an interview with a producer where he talks about color correction and monitor calibration."

(livestream replay) From BorisFX: "Justin Graham, VFX Paint and Roto Supervisor, and Veronica Hernandez, Senior Paint and Roto Artist, will talk about their personal career paths, the creative process behind the film, and break down shots of how Silhouette helped bring the film to life."

"Given time, a VFX studio can generally come up with a way to create the most incredible effects, but for She-Hulk the first thing the team needed was to determine if the project was even possible."

Et tu Philip? No matter the AI confounding this is still an interesting read: "It seems there is a career for your digital likeness long after a normal acting career would be over."

"Huge scores and explosive sound effects overpower dialogue, with mixers having their hands tied by streamer specs and artist demands. There is very little viewers can do to solve the problem except turn on the subtitles. And who can blame them?" (via Marc Wielage)

"According to the requirement of the new job at IMAX, it seems that the company is strengthening and developing its cloud infrastructure, in order to implement pipelines and workflows for cloud-based image processing applications, including post-production."

Yay, Netflix isn't kneeling to the marketing gods and using the term Artificial Intelligence: "Welcome to the first post in our multi-part series on how Netflix is developing and using machine learning (ML) to help creators make better media — from TV shows to trailers to movies to promotional art and so much more."

This upscaling solution has released a new version: "All the current models operate on this assumption and as a result, had issues processing videos with variable frame rates, repeated frames, scene changes, etc. This was hampering the development of new models and processes that require multiple passes, like stabilization, scene detection, etc. To address these concerns and allow the addition of new features, we decided to rewrite the code base."

Gear Heads
Stay updated on the latest hardware that's shipping - because the craft of color grading isn't just about software. Plus, keep an eye on future equipment trends and hardware odds-and-ends.

"While the Monogram Console includes its own dedicated software support for Adobe apps, CommandPost can power up many other control surfaces too, and not just for Final Cut Pro. The process varies depending on the kind of device you’re trying to set up, but at base, you’ll first identify the button you want to use, and then choose the command to attach to it."

This one looks interesting for HDR workflows: "Samsung's flagship UST impresses with its RGB laser engine and super-wide color gamut, its robust sound system, and its extensive streaming platform but it requires some work to get it looking its best."

"LG’s DualUp monitor is … unique. With its almost square, slightly vertical aspect ratio, it definitely stands out. Yet, somehow, I really love this thing. It’s an HDR display with a 2560×2880 resolution that is basically two 1440p displays stacked on top of each other."

Think: Scopes, "He decided to take a mini monitor used in Raspberry Pi projects and integrate one into his desk setup. The great thing about this idea is that anyone who uses a computer and needs some extra screen space could do so for as little as $60."

Perfect for the color-lover in your life this holiday season: "Unlike traditional puzzles with only one colour state, the Aeternus Aenigma has two distinct colour states that change depending on the viewing angle."

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.

Simply neat: "Scientists study the genes, anatomy, and vision of these creatures to figure out a roadmap of how the eye came to be. And so, we put together an evolutionary graphic timeline of the eye’s different stages using several candidate species."

"Not OLED but microLED with a pixel pitch of less than 40Îźm has made the display possible. LG Display says that the 12-inch display prototype has 20 percent stretchability, 100ppi resolution, and is full RGB color."

Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you next Sunday.
