I missed last week's edition, as I was grading to a deadline. But we're back!

I still have four more shows to deliver before December 23, so the poll I wanted to share with you will have to wait until the New Year.

No time to waste...

Happy Grading! I'll see you next Sunday.

Sincerely,

Patrick Inhofer

Featuring the work of creative craftsmen, the theory of color, and industry news. Learn practical workflows, useful theories, and actionable insights from existing (and emerging) leaders and teachers in our industry.

An interesting writeup: "There were fascinating talks on virtual production; direct camera-to-cloud video; using machine learning to reduce the size of archives for film dailies; using blockchain technology for distributed production; and a concept for creating a lower-cost, true holographic light field display using microlenses and high-frame-rate video."

"Described as "a nuanced crimson tone" that balances warm and cool", click through to discover the Color Of The Year that could get a colorist fired! (via Marc Wielage)

"The stage on the new Stage 15 combines two former stages to accommodate an LED wall that is 80 feet in diameter and 26 feet tall. The first feature film to shoot on the new Stage 15 will be family holiday comedy Candy Cane Lane."

"Cameron previously announced a partnership with Pixelworks to use a so-called TrueCut Motion approach to HFR where only some scenes are in 48fps while other scenes, for example dialogue scenes, are in 24fps to avoid the uncanny effect of things looking too realistic. This approach fits within the existing DCP (Digital Cinema Package) format that most 3D cinemas support."

Interesting: "In short, all colors are changed. I saw this effect after the first eye was operated on. Things that had been orange were now yellow. Skies were a more brilliant blue. The yellow and brown tint caused by the cataract changed everything,"

This is interesting: "I teamed up with a particle physicist and together we secured a professional script development deal to create a feature film script entirely written by artificial intelligence (AI)."

BMD just released the v18 update to their free PDF training book: "This official Blackmagic Design hands-on training guide takes you through a series of practical exercises that teach you how to use DaVinci Resolve’s color correction tools in detail. You’ll learn various workflows, effects, and the tools necessary to perform Hollywood-caliber grades."

(video) This has always been a bug-a-boo for Windows Resolve users on larger than 1080p computer displays.

(video) "Watch the full tutorial to see when and how you can combine multiple magic masks, add rotoscoping or use the magic mask to create solid and garbage masks for the Fusion Delta Keyer."

(video) "Learn how to use the SHIFT key to remove Matte Operators in Baselight without showing a pesky black and white checkboard!"

(video) I've found this script indispensable when working with Fusion comps from professional VFX artists. This update is definitely worth the price of a few cups of coffee: "This script makes it easy to quickly change several Loader and Saver and other Filepaths as well as Texts all throughout Fusion."

Stay updated on the latest hardware that's shipping - because the craft of color grading isn't just about software. Plus, keep an eye on future equipment trends and hardware odds-and-ends.

I love this: "DM Series AutoCal now directly supports the Colorimetry Research CR250 and CR300 spectroradiometers!" It takes about an hour, but it saves the creation of offsets for your colorimeters

With the news of DaVinci Resolve for iPad, there's a need for a good Thunderbolt hub to attach your drives and peripherals. After a long preamble, this article from OWC does a nice job explaining their TB hub offerings. I've been using one of their Thunderbolt hubs for a year, and love it.

"The newest hardware control surface has hit the market and, like any of these surfaces, if you take the time to set it up right it could improve your workflow"

"The B-1080-CEC-X is a box with a massive radiator attached to an array of nine 120 mm fans. This is a full solution with preinstalled pump, radiator, and reservoir. The only thing needed are G1/4 fittings, some coolant, and something to actually cool down."

Magic hour is forever only a flick away!

Perfect for the color-lover in your life this holiday season: "Unlike traditional puzzles with only one colour state, the Aeternus Aenigma has two distinct colour states that change depending on the viewing angle."

If you're looking for something different to bring to a holiday party this year: "The Washington Post ... dubbed its chocolate sauerkraut confection “Don’t Ask Cake” because 'people who eat it can’t guess what the secret ingredient is—and don’t want to believe it when they find out.' "

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.
(video) I love this. I'm amazed that it doesn't have more views: "The final set-up included the rolling greenscreen as the way to buy precious seconds for seamlessly updating the environment literally outside the frame ... the post-production crew was constantly receiving panoramic reference shootings from me and other vital technical data from the film set required for a comfortable VFX-workflow." (via Joe Stern)

Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you next Sunday.
