First, thanks to everyone who emailed me - knowing that Tao HQ is located in Orlando, Florida. Technically, we got a direct hit from Hurricane Ian - but it travelled across enough land that we dealt mostly with tropical force winds and localized flooding (although some of that is very serious, with waters still rising in a few areas).

Here at Tao HQ, we were (and are) safe and snug. We never lost electricity. We feel very lucky, and our hearts go out to our neighbors on the Southwest coast.

Strangely, I seem to be developing a habit of releasing new training products while getting hit by a hurricane.

The last time this happened was Hurricane Sandy, which put a tree through our roof at the end of October 2012 - just as I released a Halloween-themed training course.

This week, I was prepping the soft launch of Mixing Light's new 'All Access' membership level.

It's designed to onboard newcomers to DaVinci Resolve. It combines structured learning, with practice material, and access to Mixing Light's continuing education platform, The Insights Tutorial Library.

If you're interested, then absolutely read yesterday's email sent to Mixing Light's email list. It has all the details plus a generous Launch Special discount code.

There's a catch: Registration ends on Friday, 07 October. After that, it closes down (but will probably open up once more later this year, without the big discount).

If you know someone who could benefit from this, please forward them that link.

And hopefully, it'll be another decade before product launch week meets hurricane prep week.

See you next Sunday.

Happy Grading!

Sincerely,

Pat Inhofer

CineGear ATL is this coming Friday & Saturday. There are a few seminars that readers may find interesting.

(webinar) From the upcoming SMPTE Technology Summit: "Deepen your knowledge of the physical properties of light and how it is perceived differently by our eyes, on film and with digital capture; understand the differences between lighting a scene for Theatrical HDR and Television HDR". "It seems there will be no paid royalties on this one. Nikon has just answered RED’s lawsuit, and it denies almost all infringements regarding the compressed raw patents of RED Digital Cinema. Highlights are below."

But, of course: "Known internally as Project Caviar, Google is planning to push open and royalty-free HDR video and 3D audio alternatives to Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos."

An interesting writeup on how our industry is changing, "Earlier this month, IBC was a perfect time for some to take a well-earned breather and attendees had a chance to learn what worked – and what didn’t – to economically keep the content flow flowing."

Stay updated on the latest hardware that's shipping - because the craft of color grading isn't just about software. Plus, keep an eye on future equipment trends and hardware odds-and-ends.

"Because of how different the relative performance is between AMD and Intel depending on the type of codec you are working with, we would break down the "winner" between the two product lines based on the following codec families..."

"We do often get told ... that new technology needs time to mature before it is able to reach its full potential. So, we will be putting that theory to the ultimate test to see if the veteran 7900X will be able to take advantage of its experience and polish, or if the new technology of the 7900X will be able to take the lead despite any future optimization it may still need to go through."

"Most users won't need to concern themselves with the details of what these chipsets offer, since what really matters in the end is the functionality that the motherboard as a whole provides, but for those who enjoy digging into details we've put together this comparison."

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.

If you're like me, you can use this kind of help: "From respecting the classics to ignoring age-old adages about the viability of browns and blacks, we’ve updated the old-school canon of fall-style rules for the year of our lord 2022. Below, 10 style dos and don’ts for the upcoming autumnal season."

Fun: "How did a combination of cheese and pasta—two European cultural exports—become one of America’s best-known staples?"

Not funny. But fun to learn about: "Deepfakes, both audio and video, have been possible only with the development of sophisticated machine learning technologies in recent years. Deepfakes have brought with them a new level of uncertainty around digital media."

Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you next Sunday.
