The Craft
Featuring the work of creative craftsmen, the theory of color, and industry news. Learn practical workflows, useful theories, and actionable insights from existing (and emerging) leaders and teachers in our industry.
By my estimation, Tarantino's critical analysis of digital cinematography boils down to this: Digital cameras don't need lights, so Roger Deakins prefers it. Harshly reductive if you ask me. Listen for yourself (it's short) and see if you agree. (via Marc Wielage)

"IMAX has published its strategic update, presenting the IMAX 1.0, IMAX 2.0, and IMAX 3.0. These are not cameras, but specific business approaches or strategic pathways. Let’s hover them so we can understand better IMAX’s goals."

Game of Thrones is back with an overly dark episode. Or is it? In the comments it seems this may be due to streaming/VOD vs. watching on cable? If so, this is less about creative decisions in the grading suite and more to do with sloppy delivery? (via Marc Wielage)

“We are talking about high resolution, high frame rates, 3D, IMAX, PLF, different sound systems, and in 160 different languages” More at the link.

"The movie will only show on 600 screens and Deadline is reporting that Netflix will not be revealing how the movie does at the box office ... AMC’s CEO Adam Aron is touting the move as a good “experiment” to see if the big theater chains can work together with Netflix on a regular basis."

"YouTube is currently testing new initiatives with random users including up to 12 unskippable ads in a row and limiting 4K streaming quality to Premium subscribers."

The Tools
Our craft keeps changing. And growing. Learn about updates to your favorite software. Discover new tools to help you work faster or more creatively. Build your toolchest with new techniques and approaches.

On the off-chance I haven't shared yet, click through for the most recent updates to this calibration software: "The most obvious new feature is direct LG TV integration, enabling 1D and 3D LUTs to be directly uploaded into LG TVs with such capability."

(video) If you're wondering how this Final Cut Pro color grading plugin works, this is a good overview.

(video) "This is not just any update. It is a 2.2 update. In the Ai world, things are moving fast. Much faster than we believe it is possible ... in the Ai world, this could mean a massive leap."

I know this battle is long lost... but am I the only one who has trouble getting past the mass confounding of Machine Learning with Artificial Intelligence?

(video) I'm sharing this because it's a good example of how to develop your eye for evaluating your tools.
If Blackmagic Certification is important to you: "In this official Blackmagic Design Certified training course, you’ll learn how to import, organize, edit, add effects, color grade, mix, and deliver finished projects using DaVinci Resolve 18."

(videos) "ResolveCon 2022 was a 2-day event live-streamed from Eugene, Oregon, USA featuring many of your favorite DaVinci Resolve trainers from YouTube."

"Blackmagic Design has announced their new schedule of free courses! View the schedule below and click on the links to register."

I haven't tried it yet but can think of several use cases: "ShotCompare is an online video comparison platform that shows the differences of two videos. It works on any internet browser without the need to install any software or plugin."

Just released for the Mac: "An intuitive, easy-to-use backup tool for content creators to speed up their camera, memory card, and storage device offloads to multiple destinations with 100% exact matching data verification."

Stay updated on the latest hardware that's shipping - because the craft of color grading isn't just about software. Plus, keep an eye on future equipment trends and hardware odds-and-ends.

"It appears that from March 2023, many TV sets (especially OLED and 8K) could be prohibited from being sold in the European Union due to high power consumption."

This does require a license of Keyboard Maestro for the automation mapping they're executing to make this happen:

"Color Grade in Primary Color, Primary Log and HDR, control secondaries with all of the Qualifier controls, adjust Power Window parameters, control Tracking, bend color with Color Warper, fine tune Mattes and Keys, adjust Sizing, work with Dolby Vision, adjust Magic Mask, manipulate Printer Lights all with your Loupedeck device."
Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.

"Carpenter is hosting an event named “Masters of Monsters, Godzilla!” where he will showcase four of his favorite giant monster movies including the original Japanese cut of Godzilla."

In my challenging campaign to become more fashionable, this is fun: "From designers to stylists to Instagram menswear mavens, read on to get their take and arm yourself against any criticism from the dowdy and unadventurous as you stride confidently past them into fall, blinding their dull and lifeless eyes with your pearly pantaloons."

K-razy. "The system uses images with descriptions to learn what the world looks like and how it is often described. It also uses unlabeled videos to learn how the world moves ... Make-A-Video lets you bring your imagination to life by generating whimsical, one-of-a-kind videos with just a few words or lines of text."

Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you next Sunday.
