I had to take last weekend off from this Newsletter - which was a bummer because this hit the wire about 10 days ago:
Davinci
DaVinci Resolve for iPad had the attention of post production professionals everywhere. Most observers seemed surprised.

While seeing that image was definitely eye-catching - to me, it's the logical conclusion of 30 years of development. When I set up my own shop in 2003, it was because Blackmagic and AJA teamed up to release the Decklink card - allowing my tower to output SDI images to tape decks and CRT displays.

My gambit 20 years ago was this: It would only be a matter of time before CPUs would be powerful enough to process HD video that even entry-level computers would have the bandwidth to do what it took $20k of Big Iron to process.

When you add in Apple's decade-long effort to merge iOS with MacOS, on their own hardware architecture - DaVinci Resolve (or any other CPU/GPU-intensive app) on iPad is not only evolutionary - it's predictable.

What's my biggest hope about Resolve on iPad? That it allows us to sit next to the client during review sessions and make quick tweaks, jump between shots, and drop into the edit page to make quick adjustments.

I am also curious to see if they make touch-specific enhancements. We won't have to wait long to see.

I'll see you next Sunday.

Happy Grading!

Sincerely,

Pat Inhofer

Scott Simmons rounds up what we know, and speculates on what he's seeing in the product images.

(video) Recorded live at ResolveCon. Presenter - Cullen Kelly: "Color management is one of the most important things for a colorist to understand, and understand well. Yet many colorists misunderstand it... "

(videos) Embedded videos are on the landing page: "Streaming Server Mini streams reference quality HD video and 8 channels of audio. Free BETA is now available for NVidia PCs and M1/Max/Pro + intel-based Macs and supports NDI as well as most AJA and Blackmagic cards."

"Warning: don’t try this at home unless you’re an advanced Mac user who’s comfortable with UNIX. If you are, you can use the single-user mode or verbose mode in macOS to help isolate issues related to startup."

(video) "It’s packed with info on different scenarios, from Team Projects to remoting into the office to edit. It’s informative and could open up some possibilities you didn’t know you had."

"Some of my documentary projects have lasted for 3-4 years. If I had followed the “never update in the middle of a project” advice, I’d either be on CS2 still, or I’d have a lot of versions installed ... so when we see the little blue update indicator, how do we make sure that everything goes to plan?"

As this article details, the big problem for US-based drone cinematographers after this blacklisting? Servicing and replacement parts.
Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.

(podcast) "We talk in-depth with Jules Urbach CEO, of OTOY Inc. about what it will take to build an actual Holodeck.

OTOY has been working with The Roddenberry Estate on creating assets for the Immersive Roddenberry Archive Experiences. This is a multi-year roadmap to preserve the history of Roddenberry’s Star Trek work across Movies, TV, Comics, and Literature."

(video) To me, this is more cringe'y than fun'y. But click through to decide for yourself.
Definitely fun: "As seen in the humorous clip above, much of She-Hulk’s performance involved shooting Tatiana Maslany on set in a MoCap suit, but given the vast height difference, many of her performances were filmed with the actress walking on a special raised platform or wearing a false plaster face suspended a foot over her head."
Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you next Sunday.
