From The Publisher
We're one week out from the NAB show floor opening in Las Vegas. If you're there and see me, be sure to say hi.

On Monday morning, I'm emailing this list with a form to see if you'd like to join me, plus interested Newsletter readers and Mixing Light members on a 'monitor crawl.' Details will be in that email.

I'll also be at the Colorist Mixer and the Media Motion Ball (links at the bottom of this email).

Next Sunday's Newsletter is iffy. I'm traveling on Saturday. So if the Newsletter isn't written by Friday, it won't ship next week.

Enjoy today's read! Some interesting items in here.

See you again sometime in the next two weeks. Happy Grading!

Sincerely,

Pat Inhofer

The Craft
Featuring the work of creative craftsmen, the theory of color, and industry news. Learn practical workflows, useful theories, and actionable insights from existing (and emerging) leaders and teachers in our industry.

(podcast) I just recently discovered the new Colorist Society (CSI) podcast series. The first episode launched in January of this year, featuring interviews with top colorists, and is hosted by Josh Petok. Add it to your feed.

"You’ve probably opened Facebook and Twitter tens of thousands of times in your life. But can you tell which hues of blue their logos are or the specific shades of the other apps you — and millions of other people — open every day?" (via Martyn Bull)

(podcast) "Among the many topics discussed this week are the ways in which theatrical exhibition help tamp down piracy by keeping pristine copies off the pirating sites, the success of National Cinema Day, how the ongoing domestic box office recovery is tied to increases in wide releases, and the slightly complicated way average ticket prices are calculated." From the Bulwark Goes To Hollywood podcast.

"A couple of weeks ago, I got the chance to attend Runway’s inaugural AI Film Fest in San Francisco, from which the team has now posted the winners. Numerous entries are well worth a look, and I thought I’d highlight a couple of my favorites here."

"With the advancement of machine learning, AI is increasingly being used to do facial and voice re-enactments ... the core technology involves creating ML-inferred versions of human faces and voices that are so realistic they can be used in place of real people in certain situations such as replacing the need for traditional dubbing."

Two things: Notice that Netflix uses the term 'Machine Learning'. Score one for truth in advertising. Well done, Netflix Tech Blog! Second, this is an interesting read: "Much of the ML literature focuses on model training, evaluation, and scoring. In this post, we will explore an understudied aspect of the ML lifecycle: integration of model outputs into applications."

"London College of Fashion and Framestore's Johannes Saam discuss how to make generative fashion AI videos."

The Tools
Our craft keeps changing. And growing. Learn about updates to your favorite software. Discover new tools to help you work faster or more creatively. Build your toolchest with new techniques and approaches.

Just in time for the new version to be released in seven days ;-)

Seriously though, if you want to supplement your grading skills with Fusion or Fairlight, both of those books from BMD I highly recommend.

"Color saturation isn't just a knob you dial up and down. Cullen Kelly reveals the simple trick to getting cinematic color in DaVinci Resolve."

(video) Like the headline says.

(video) "Steve delivers a full 40-minute tutorial on sound editing in DaVinci Resolve's Fairlight Page."

Ace Fotokem colorist John Daro writes, "How a colorist goes about the [Dolby Vision] analysis is just as important as the analysis itself. This is going to get into a religious debate more than a technical one and everything from this point on is my opinion based on my experiences with the tech. Probably not what Dolby would say." (via Marc Wielage)

(video) This 5-minute video highlights what looks like a super-interesting video course on Mononode's website for a no-code way of developing your own DCTLs. Check it out and if you're interested, click on the link in the description for the purchase link (which is at the bottom of the page).

(video) "Now you can use GyroFlow open-source stabilization software directly within Davinci Resolve via an OFX Plugin. In this video, I show you how this works." The Intro explains the types of cameras it works for and then the demo starts at 3:30. (via Rob Trombino)

"Blackmagic Cloud Store comes in three sizes: 20TB ($7,595 USD), 80TB ($22,995 USD), and 320TB (built to order) ... It features dual power supplies and fast, quiet M.2 SSD memory cards, which are installed around a central core."

"We are no longer locked into AMD Threadripper PRO, and you can choose between AMD and Intel based on how the entire platform (not just the raw performance) best fits your entire workflow. But for other workflows, AMD continues to hold a solid performance lead." Details are at the link.

"Save money on buying expensive storage from Apple by investing in this Thunderbolt-rated hub and HD/SSD bay enclosure." I own one of these for the MacMini assistant station and concur with this review.

NAB 2023
A listing of events & resources for readers who plan on attending NAB 2023 Las Vegas.

Sunday, April 16, 2023, at Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant, Las Vegas, NV. Registration is required.

The Tao Treasurer and I will be attending. We hope to see you there! Monday, April 17th, 5:30pm at Sahara Hotel. Registration required.

"Check out the registration packages and options and build your perfect pass."

Sometimes it's less expensive to buy hotel tickets through this NAB link. But double-check by calling the hotel directly and see if they can do any better.

If you're attending NAB, I always recommend staying at a hotel on the monorail. It's super convenient for getting to the Convention Center and inexpensive. It costs more to buy tickets in Vegas. You can pre-purchase on this website or save a few dollars more as an add-on when registering at NABShow for your Exhibit passes.

(videos) "What we set out to do was to develop a workflow that would allow us to be able to connect a reference monitor to a remote instance, which would unlock really high-fidelity color grading in the cloud."

"Color Grading in the Cloud and Production & Post in the Multi-Cloud Universe are the titles for the two sessions hosted by SMPTE Hollywood, featuring a host of industry professionals as speakers."

(video) "Meet The Panel: JoAnne K. (Head of Production Technology, Amazon Studios); Katie Hinsen (Director of Technology, Marvel Studios); Jeff Sengpiehl (CTO, Key Code Media); Michael Kammes (Sr Director of Innovation, Shift Media); [moderator] Debra Kaufman (Tech Industry Editor & Consultant)"

Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you in a Sunday or two.
