The Craft
Featuring the work of creative craftsmen, the theory of color, and industry news. Learn practical workflows, useful theories, and actionable insights from existing (and emerging) leaders and teachers in our industry.
(podcast) "[Peter Doyle] explains his day-to-day processes for grading an image, whether its to create a tone, change it from day to night, or add a signature DP’s texture. He ruminates on what the direction of the vision is, and argues that ‘aesthetics is a balance between wanting to seduce or confront your audience with your imagery’."
Colorist Marc Wielage shares this item, writing, "Tobia has some interesting things to say. While the concept borders on the esoteric, I think people interested in the science behind color grading might find it informative."
For those who are interested, click for the recording of the meeting this week. And here is the link for Virtual Working Groups' original notice and the link to the workspace.
(podcast) "Wonder Studio is a browser-based platform that allows people to drag and drop a computer-generated character into any scene and using artificial intelligence, it will replace a live-action actor with a Mocap version of the digital character. It replaces any actor in the scene with a 3D character without the need for any other human intervention."
The examples in this article fall into the realm of fantasy. Still, there's a kernel of truth in here, "While there is evident opportunity to expand talent opportunities, there would seem to be equal potential for talent exploitation and diminished future opportunities if they unwittingly or desperately sign away or sell off use of their digital likeness absent compensation and consent."

"One of the major changes within this new ColourSpace release is the replacement and update of Calibrite/X-Rite probes integration with an open source solution that removes X-Rite proprietary code, providing greater flexibility for ColourSpace operation ... Additional improvements and additions include the integration of LG Pro monitors, as well as the optional LG integrated probe."

"The newest update to Autodesk Flame includes desktop, hybrid and cloud finishing solutions that further the tool’s role as a centralized hub for conform, timeline, VFX, publishing, color and delivery."
"We realize that individual video editors don’t need to do this kind of work a lot, but it does come up. And there needs to be a better way of creating visualization, be it a simple bar chart or a Bubble chart showing years of data, than trying to shoehorn Powerpoint charts into video."

"Imagine using AI to help create a quality soundscape for a film, in a dedicated interface with a giant royalty-free sound library and you have an idea of what Audio Design Desk is all about."
I very much endorse this app - especially for StreamDeck and similar hardware tools for controlling the software we use, "Keyboard Maestro is a powerful Mac mainstay, capable of automating tasks, controlling applications, and even manipulating text and images."
For their Enterprise clients, "With visible Watermark ID and DRM (Digital Rights Management) encryption, 2FA, and SSO (Single Sign-On), along with our secure reviewer and dedicated Inbox workflows, Frame.io gives you the absolute highest level of security for remote collaboration."

"Born out of years of experience, Alix Milan’s motto ”fail to prepare, prepare to fail,” serves as the guiding principle for his DIT and video playback rental company We Love Hue. These panels at NAB were very impressive. Their in-person demo of lighting with 'standard' LED panels vs. their 'TrueLight' panels with an additional white diode was stunningly effective, "TrueLight® is a game-changing technology, delivering high-quality lighting from LED panels with extra emitters – offering accurate, calibrated colours."

Take a look if you work on-set - especially with product shots. This tech may make our work much easier.
"We have seen an issue in our Support department with a specific hardware combination: the Asus X99E-10G WS motherboard and triple or quad NVIDIA GPU configurations. When running a workload that is heavy on both the CPU and GPUs, systems with this hardware can crash and report DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION “blue screen of death” (BSOD)." If this effects you, you'll want to click through.
"If you are contemplating one of the new OLED or QD-OLED monitors for desktop work, know that text does not looks as crisp as it could be. It's not due to OLED but rather the pixel structure."
"LG Display is currently mass-producing OLED panels at two 8.5-generation (8.5G) factories. A 10.5G factory would allow it to produce cheaper large-sized OLED panels and even larger OLEDs than the current 97-inch panel."
"A Rule 41 dismissal means that the two companies came together and agreed on something ... While the public will likely never know what the two companies determined ... the two parties definitely decided that whatever agreement they could reach was better than the cost of going through with the litigation." Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff catching my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya gotta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.
This is an interesting discussion that's kind of fun... "Because AI tools like ChatGPT work by predicting strings of words that it thinks best match your query, they lack the reasoning to apply logic or consider any factual inconsistencies they're spitting out. In other words, AI will sometimes go off the rails trying to please you. This is what's known as a 'hallucination'."
Definitely fun: "The exhibits featured a huge array of technology from years past, most of which you couldn’t touch however there was a consignment area as well that you could pick up any retro-tech that you needed in your life." From this summary click through to the original write-up for all awesome images of the early days of computing.
"Netflix started its days as a DVD-by-mail company competing with Blockbuster stores in the US. It shipped its first DVD, Beetlejuice, on March 10, 1998, and has since shipped over 5.2 billion discs, with the most popular movie being The Blind Side." Click through for the end date.

Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you next Sunday.
