Just two quick things before we get to the Newsletter...

The Color Time Podcast with Vincent Taylor

On Mixing Light, I've been working with colorist Vincent Taylor on what he's calling a 'micro-podcast'..

- Check out the series trailer, explaining his concept

- Here's the first episode with colorist Rory Gordon

- You can subscribe on your favorite podcatcher or on its YouTube channel

This series will go beyond our craft and interview people who make a living with color, including a tattoo artist and an aura-reading psychic. Check it out; if you like it, help spread the word!

The FilmLight Colour Awards are accepting submissions

Through the end of this month, you can submit one project in each of the 5 categories. Here's the important bit: The software you use to color grade doesn't matter.

Okay, let's get going.

Enjoy this week's Newsletter! See you next Sunday.

Happy Grading!

Sincerely,

Pat Inhofer

I'm pleased that they're continuing with this: "The FilmLight Colour Awards celebrates the art of colour across the world and aims to reflect the cultural, visual and technical values of the international colour grading community of today. It aspires to encourage the growth of the colourist’s prestige at all levels – from junior colourists to industry veterans – and to recognise the value they bring to the film industry."

If you spend your career grading live action, this is one of the best parts of working on animation "He also points out how, particularly in animation, an important part of the colorist’s role is to interpret and understand the team’s creative language."

The just-completed season of Picard did a great job paying homage to the look and feel of the 'Next Generation' era of Star Trek. This is a great writeup on its VFX

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff catching my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya gotta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.

"Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 10 featured multiple moments showrunner Terry Matalas was unsure the team could pull off." I can't say I was a fan of Seasons 1 & 2. But Season 3 was fun and this article has some nice behind the scenes insights.

This is a fun read, "What’s harder to model is the way that new technology—especially communications technology—might simultaneously save time and waste time, making us, paradoxically, both more and less productive."

"The size of this thing is just ridiculous, bordering on the obscene. It took me a second to realize that the giant thing they were constructing in the first minute of the video is in fact an engine, which, when compared to the rest of the ship, is not that big at all. Make sure you watch to the end to see the oddball paint job on the bow."

Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you next Sunday.
