(podcast) Episode 1, "We had the incredible opportunity to chat with senior colorist and founder of MTO Color, Mark Todd Osborne, about his journey in the industry and his recent work on the film Supercell. Join us with your beverage of choice!"

This article recently popped up on my radar and is a great refresher (or primer): "One of the often overlooked potential issues with PQ based HDR for home viewing is that because the standard is absolute there is no way to increase the display's light output to overcome surrounding room light levels - the peak brightness cannot be increased, and neither can the fixed gamma (EOTF) curve." "The gulf between the WGA and the AMPTP—which relates to myriad issues like staffing numbers, working period, Artificial Intelligence, and residual payments for hit shows—suggests we could be in for a strike that lasts well into the fall. And that is where we come to the central theme of this article. The impact of the WGA strike on post-production" (via Marc Wielage)

Super interesting: "There is another revolution happening with machine learning in volumetric capture. Or rather capturing experiences for anyone to view dynamically on standard mobile devices. Welcome to the new world of professional ‘experiencials’ and NeRFs."

"Recent projects that Maciejczek-Potter has helped deliver include Limitless with Chris Hemsworth, The Lost Pirate Kingdom for Netflix and Elizabeth Windsor for Amazon Prime. Let’s find out more from Maciejczek-Potter…"

(podcast) "On the T-Stop Inn Podcast, Dr. Mike Seymour shares his insights into how Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technology will change the way that every department in film production works over the next two years."

Film critic Sonny Bunch summarizes a Supreme Court finding on adapted works: "In 1981, Newsweek licensed a photo of the musician Prince by Lynn Goldsmith ... the license sold by Goldsmith to Warhol and Conde Nast was for one-time use. Fast forward to 2016 and Prince’s death, when Conde Nast asked about reusing the painting for a magazine commemorating his life and music."

(video) "Adding your own effects and titles to the effects library on the edit page within Davinci Resolve is surprisingly easy once you get the technique nailed!"

"In this article, we’re taking a closer look at the evolving concept of splitting “creative” and “technical” aspects of a look into individual transforms. The existing concepts, differing in definition and characteristics, have a huge impact on the practical application on set and in post-production."

(videos) All four videos are embedded on this page: "ARRI has released a series of four videos that give you a comprehensive run-through of their ARRI Reference Tool which was released in conjunction with the ALEXA 35."

"The biggest change in this release is the ability to add prefixes and suffixes to parameter values. This adds extra text to the front or end of the parameter's value, for example adding the word "client_" before the client name parameter value."

"Apple’s Final Cut Pro doesn’t feature a built-in Adjustment Layer feature. It prefers that you apply looks and effects at a clip level. But many editors want to be able to apply a LUT or an effect to an entire timeline quickly ... Larry Jordan’s technique for creating an Adjustment Layer is a clever way to get what you need."

"Unreal Engine 5.2 continues to expand the tools for Virtual Production ... The release notes published by Epoic Games and a blog post highlight some of the new or enhanced aspects of the toolset. Here are some excerpts..."

Stay updated on the latest hardware that's shipping - because the craft of color grading isn't just about software. Plus, keep an eye on future equipment trends and hardware odds-and-ends.

It's a bizarre idea - but I find it somewhat intriguing.

"The AV1 encoding is superior over H265 (HEVC) for many reasons, including smaller file sizes at higher image quality. More importantly, AV1 is royalty-free, while HEVC is royalty bearing. Those are the clear advantages of AV1, but there is one major downside."

"Here we will compare all the Mac and MacBook CPUs, GPUs, and other specs, such as RAM, to demonstrate how the M1 and M2-series chips compare to each other and to their Intel predecessors."

"Users in game development, virtual production, and architecture have developed specialized workflows in Unreal engine, and Epic continues to add new features supporting this wide variety of users. This article will go over how we are currently benchmarking Unreal Engine."

"There is slightly more brightness on offer thanks to the Alpha 9 AI Processor 4K Gen6 chip and the latest OLED panel, which when combined together are classed as OLED Evo, plus, like last year, the video processing is now some of the best on the market for upscaling, detail, smooth gradation and motion."

(videos) This page hosts a variety of discussion panels from NAB that some readers may find interesting - mostly dealing with cloud and remote workflows.

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff catching my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya gotta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.

(video) "this video takes us on a virtual tour of the 3D rendered bridges of every iteration of the Starship Enterprise from Star Trek, from the original 1964 sketches to the final scenes of Star Trek: Picard. I've watched a bunch of Star Trek recently and it was neat to see the evolution of the design and presumed technology. "

Funny. As in 'smells funny'. "Somebody is working very hard to deceive listeners. They’ve created a tangled web of conflicting names and titles and attributions."

Fun.

Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you in two Sundays.
