In November, the Color Grading Newsletter will have a new home - on MixingLight.com. It's the first of several changes that should be completed by December.

If you read this Newsletter via email, starting next Sunday, the 'View In Browser' link in the masthead will link to a page on MixingLight.com - and TaoOfColor.com will, most likely, redirect to that page as well.

I have a few more format changes I'll be implementing when December rolls around. I'll announce them as they happen.

Happy Grading! I'll see you next Sunday.

Sincerely,

Pat Inhofer

This article can help add nuance to your thinking about the impacts of Machine Learning on your career.
Color me skeptical: "Nightshade makes it possible to include an instruction set that can cause AI models to “break” during unauthorized scraping. It does this by inserting “invisible pixels.” As a result, popular AI models including DALL-E, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion will subsequently render erratic results, turning dogs into cats and cars into cows, and so forth."

I've linked to FCP.co many many times over the past decade. They produced a ton of great commentary and tutorials. But in recent times they hadn't been popping up on my radar. It turns out - there's a reason for that. Peter Wiggins explains in this blog post.

I wish Peter Wiggins and the rest of FCP.co team the best of luck. And thanks for the years of your hard work! Your website will be missed.

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff catching my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya gotta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.
(video) This Baumgartner Restoration is brilliant, as it shows an amateurish overpainting attempt that rendered the painting two dimensional. Click through and watch the overpaint being removed - particularly on the face. It's as if the original restorer was painting flesh tone by-the-numbers. It reminds me of a colorist furiously keying skin tones to align them on the 'flesh tone line' and losing the underlying human variation. This is a great watch!
I lived and worked in Manhattan for 20+ years. This article represents a forever paradox in a city that is constantly rebuilding itself. It's a fun read. But not quite so funny to experience.

Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you next week.
