Issue CDLXX: The Game Spot (not) Edition
The Tao of Color Grading Newsletter
Curated links of news, reviews, thoughts, career advice, and humor for professional Video / Film Colorists & Finishers. Delivered Sundays.
It was a slow week on the Intertubes (if you don't count The Game Spot story). Luckily, there's the backlog of Mixing Light tutorials from our marathon this month. Plus, LiftGammaGain gave us a few good threads worth sharing widely.

Happy Grading!

I'll see you next Sunday.
(and remember - if you have a story that's a fit for this Newsletter, hit reply or email it to '[email protected]'! Include a quick reason for the suggested link.)

The Craft
Featuring the work of creative craftsmen, the theory of color, and industry news. Learn practical workflows, useful theories, and actionable insights from existing (and emerging) leaders and teachers in our industry.

(forum) A teacher at a college asks the forum for good content to help students understand our craft. Lots of good responses in here that even pros will find interesting.

(video) "Atmosphere is a quality that almost any creation can have, it is often desirable, but it is tricky to achieve." If you're in the mood for strong, dynamic imagery click through and watch the embedded video.

Because a lot of us work in this space... just an FYI.

Because U.S. business owners need to know: "Form 1099-NEC now takes the place of Form 1099-MISC, so don't be surprised when you start receiving these from your 2020 clients! Here’s what freelancers need to know . . . "

Blu-ray, UHD Blu-ray, and DVD player sales have dropped steadily since their 2017 peak. It looks like not even stay-at-home orders could arrest the decline. Click through to see the numbers for yourself.

I guess the term 'artificial intelligence' is so 2020: "The new processor surveys the entire frame in real time, breaking down specific zones to concentrate on — such as realistic skin tone — as a way to mimic how our brains process images . . . the Cognitive Processor XR will aid the TVs’ 8K performance." Oh, it's XR... wow! In TV marketing, even Cognitive Processing needs a superlative.

Then there's the notion that our TVs will now start color grading our images to its perception of 'memory colors' (sigh).

"First, we cover the motivation behind using HDR technology for on-set activities. This understanding lets us derive specific requirements and consequences for camera departments generally and the DIT cart specifically. We also provide an overview of the required equipment."

There are items in this list that colorists will also find useful.
(forum) The developer of Lattice just released 'Scatter'. I'm linking to LGG because the pricing discussion is interesting, as plugins push to adopt the subscription model.

(forum) "a small tool to view/edit the colour metadata in Prores and Quicktime video files. I've recently polished it a bit so that it's available for the wider community (free and open-source under the MIT License, contributions welcome!)." Nice.

(video) The PDF Guide is based on a blog post by Luke Ross that I shared here a few weeks ago. Luke walks you through the PDF Guide in the video and the download link is in the video descriptor.

(video) Colorist Darren Mostyn covers all my favorite points about working on the 2019 Mac Pro. But I'm really including this for a great pro-tip when adjusting your Noise Reduction. That bit starts at 10:18.

Oliver Peters is quite impressed by this 1st generation M1 mini.

"Our focus will be on improving performance and stability of applications besides games but it’s worth noting that a number of people have experienced increased performance . . . when disabling Game Mode so give it a try."

"In the context of wireless networks and smartphones, “5G” is the marketing hook for the next generation of telecommunications products and services. But what is 5G, really, and what will it do for us?"

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.

"it relies on Sony’s Eye-Sensing Light Field Display (ELFD) technology to create an experience somewhere between virtual reality and next-gen 3D." Click through for a reality-check on the price.

This headline had me burst out loud laughing. But that's not why it's here. It's here because it both FUNny and a real question for far too many of our older relatives! Help them, please.

Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you next Sunday.
