Issue CDLXXIVI: The Debayering Edition
The Tao of Color Grading Newsletter
Curated links of news, reviews, thoughts, career advice, and humor for professional Video / Film Colorists & Finishers. Delivered Sundays.
From The Publisher
There's a first time for everything.

For this Newsletter, this week is the first time I've got zip, nada, nothing for the 'Gear Heads' section. It's not that there weren't stories - it's just that everything I came across was either derivative or not interesting enough to share. So you won't see it this week.

On the plus side - there's lots of meat in The Craft. The intertubes give'th and the intertubes take'th away.

My favorite this week: Joey D'Anna posted a great (free, in front of the paywall) Insight for Mixing Light about debayering images from the Mars Perseverance rover in DaVinci Resolve - including links to the NASA image archive and the DCTL, so you can try it yourself. You'll find it in the Pushing Photons section.

Enjoy and Happy Grading!

I'll see you next Sunday.
(and remember - if you have a story that's a fit for this Newsletter, hit reply or email it to '[email protected]'! Include a quick reason for the suggested link.)

The Craft
Featuring the work of creative craftsmen, the theory of color, and industry news. Learn practical workflows, useful theories, and actionable insights from existing (and emerging) leaders and teachers in our industry.

(webinar) The peeps over at the International Colorist Academy (ICA) is hosting a webinar discussing how to set your prices, pitch for work, and charge clients. It requires registration (and your email address) but is otherwise free. March 25, 7p UTC.

Mumbai colorist Ragib Metin Okutay talks about his career. But I'm linking to this mostly for his interesting and honest observation about skin tone color grading trends in India.

(podcast) "Gino is one of the leading color graders in Peru . . . He has really embraced HDR . . . We chatted about working in Peru and how he started Gamma Post in Lima."

(videos) If you've got the time, top off your beverage, relax, and read about the filmmaking and thinking behind the look of this film. Includes several Behind The Scenes video embeds.

(video) "Well let's seriously overthink it and explore some color theory concepts on why this color is the king of graphics color."

(video) This embedded video is a fascinating look at the Forbes Pigment Collection. Housed at Harvard University it collects hundreds of pigments from around the globe - and the raw minerals from which they're created. This is definitely worth your time (and only 5 minutes long).

"The 2021 HPA Tech Retreat has a lot to live up to. It’s being billed as a never-before-seen demonstration showcasing how web-based technology can radically transform decades-old production methods."

(videos) Colorist Dario Bigi sent me this Twitter thread started by colorist Juan Salvo asking about a 'gaze study' that swept the Intertubes back in the '00s. Responses include two videos and an article. It's very interesting stuff.

(video) An intro into using the Match Move ResolveFX.

"CopyCat is unique in that it’s a neural network that artists can train themselves. All you need is a set of before and after images and the neural network will train itself to apply the same changes to new images." Interesting.

This article contains an embedded video and a very good summary of this new app: "I’ve always waited for a tool that can blur the lines between a node-based workflow and a simpler “what you see is what you get” style workflow. Thus, a new player has entered the arena: Photon by color.io."

If you're keeping an eye on the Streambox ecosystem: "Recent additions to the product, which was originally introduced in mid-February, include Spectra for Adobe, SpectraBM for Blackmagic and support for Spectra for Resolve. All are available now except for Resolve, which will be released next month."

I found this page while writing the Newsletter today when a video failed to load. Could be useful to bookmark if a remote client is having video loading problems: "Find out how good the YouTube experience is with your Internet Provider using the Google Video Quality Report."

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.

(video) A terrific single-take mash-up that's sure to put a smile on your face. (via Robbie Carman)

(video) "One marching band from Britain is performing to an Italian audience when a band representing the Italian Bersaglieri (mobile light infantry who traditionally run at a trot instead of march) arrives to upstage them. Silly and staged, but fun nonetheless." Agreed. But you should stick around to the very last few seconds for the payoff.

Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you next Sunday.
