The Craft
Featuring the work of creative craftsmen, the theory of color, and industry news. Learn practical workflows, useful theories, and actionable insights from existing (and emerging) leaders and teachers in our industry.
I'm not quite sure of their methodology but this summary of how lockdowns have affected colorists feels right.
This SMPTE course is led by Dado Valentic: "Learn how to deploy various color management techniques to a whole spectrum of productions, from live transmissions to high-end feature film shows. As a bonus module, we focus on cinematographers and how they can best manage color-managed workflow and set the right level of expectation from their DITs, Dailies Colorist, Supervising Colorist, and Color Scientist." This 7-week, independent study course starts 31 May 2021.
Talking about displays: "The idea of mixing colours from red, green and blue primaries is more or less an article of faith. Now, though, some people are starting to throw cyan, lime and amber into the mix. What’s going on?"

If you've got a VR headset - or are looking for a reason to buy one - this roundup of International Space Station VR journeys may be right up your alley.

"Tribeca ushers in the return of live entertainment as the first major North American film festival to be held in person. But there will also be a Tribeca at Home version."

Click through for the very curious solution: "It’s been widely covered in posts and videos how external drive performance is unacceptably slow with the M1 Macs. Well, we have some breaking news on this subject and you’re reading it here first on the Rocketyard Blog..."

This article from 2020 recently popped up on my radar, asking the industry to think proactively: "With the world going mobile and billions watching and learning on displays, the dangers of creating a myopic generation can’t be overstated. One solution appears to be replacing potentially harmful emissive displays with reflective devices." Registration for the website is free.

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.

(video) The new trailer for Season 4 just dropped - in case you needed a Stranger Things fix.

Interesting. My take? Movie posters may be a suitable long-term alternative to Dogecoin: "While digital may reduce costs for cinemas and studios while keeping visual engagement high, what happens to the good old fashioned film poster? Does digital mean that Sotheby’s won’t have posters of the next “Fast & Furious” to auction in 100 years?" Or not. But the Dogecoin ride could be fun - until it isn't.

Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you next Sunday.
