Issue CDLXXXIII: The Thanking Jonny Edition
The Tao of Color Grading Newsletter
Curated links of news, reviews, thoughts, career advice, and humor for professional Video / Film Colorists & Finishers. Delivered Sundays.
From The Publisher
I didn't publish last week due to an unexpected client deadline. This week, normally, I'd declare that I won't be publishing next week due to the Labor Day holiday weekend.

But since I skipped last week, here's my pinky-swear with you: If I can get next week's edition locked and loaded by Friday, then I'll publish. If not, if I have to write this next Saturday instead, then all bets are off. The Tao Treasurer gets first dibs on my time next weekend ;-)

Happy Grading!

I'll see you next Sunday - or, the Sunday after that.
(and remember - if you have a story that's a fit for this Newsletter, hit reply or email it to '[email protected]'! Include a quick reason for the suggested link.)

The Craft
Featuring the work of creative craftsmen, the theory of color, and industry news. Learn practical workflows, useful theories, and actionable insights from existing (and emerging) leaders and teachers in our industry.
(podcast) "He scored a job at the Blackmagic Design Post House as a VT op and worked his way up to being a senior colorist. Setyo now runs his own Color grading shop in Kuala Lumpur."
Jonny does another signature round-up blog post... this time of production and post-production newsletters, kicking off with the Tao Newsletter! Thanks, Jonny. But keep scrolling in this roundup, there are a few resources that will be new to you. I just signed up for a few.

A fascinating read: "I wonder if having “normal” vision would have made me a better artist growing up. Would it make me better at my job now? Would I have pursued a more design-oriented career, as opposed to one that’s more dev-focused? These are just some of the things that pop into my head."

On deep fakes: “There's always a sensitivity around the ethics of bringing someone back digitally, and let's face it, some of the tech [has] proven that it can be done very well now,” Hammond told us. “The more convincing it becomes, the more sinister it gets, in a way. It’s not a caricature of that person; it’s a real representation of them.” An interesting read about a type of project you may, one day, be asked to work on.

The Tools
Our craft keeps changing. And growing. Learn about updates to your favorite software. Discover new tools to help you work faster or more creatively. Build your toolchest with new techniques and approaches.
There are quite a few new features in this release. But I can't ignore that many of my peers have reverted to earlier versions of Resolve since 17.2 induces a range of show-stopping errors for them - none of which I've yet replicated.
(video) In this session, Cullen covers DCTLs, ACES and color-managed workflows, contrast, getting consistent color across devices, and more.

(video) "There are many factors that impact performance in DaVinci Resolve. Codecs are one of the first topics to explore."

(video) "Create Fusion templates in DaVinci Resolve with your own icons, include images or 3d assets, and bundle all files into a DaVinci Resolve Template Bundle to share with others." I'm guessing this is to support a bubbling pool of graphic designers starting to sell Fusion templates on Envato.

From an email blast this week: "If you are an experienced Davinci Colorist and you work with Touch Portal Pro on Windows platform, we have a few slots available as testers for our new Davinci Color Deck (not yet for sale). This exciting new product allows you to control many parts of the Color page previously inaccessible with your device." Click through to apply.

A new version of these software scopes was just released. The announcement isn't on their website, so I'm linking to the docs for one of the most notable new features, in the QC department: HDR MaxFall and MaxCLL: "The HDR Stats view will display the statistics for both the current frame as well as the global ones (up to this moment). The application will accumulate the calculations as long as the input signal is live and the stats will be updated accordingly." Also, they now support AJA video cards.

(video) One of many new features: "Artists now have access to the entire node-based workflow for roto, paint, tracking, warping, keying, and compositing in their host application." Is this the year I purchase a one-year license to see how quickly I can integrate Silhouette into my workflow? I'm seriously considering it.

Precisely as the headline promises. If you need to nail your Avid workflow for relinking assets then this article is one to read and bookmark.

Compare. Contrast. Your answer will depend on your circumstances.

(webinar) June 19: "NYC colorist and finishing artist Jeff Sousa and director Geoff Bailey will share their first-hand experience creating “Death and the Lady”, a CG animated short feature." Registration required.

"How is A.I. changing post-production? One way is the use of machine learning in upscaling footage. We test some A.I. contenders against traditional algorithms."

(webinar) Free, in front of the paywall for the next two weeks: "Help us celebrate the 160th Anniversary of the color photograph, its history, and the RGB color model! Presented by colorist Hector Berrebi."

Seriously, Hector's passion on this topic is infectious and there are some *great* insights in this presentation that directly relate to the technical underpinnings of today's technology.

A newcomer to colorist control surfaces talks about the experience: "Instead of clicking around and getting distracted, I was finishing a clip, moving to the next one, finishing that, moving on… it felt good." Much more at the link, including the differences between the Resolve Micro and Mini panels.

"In order to get the fastest write speed of an external drive when used in conjunction with an M1 Mac, the following conditions are required..." Such a strange set of requirements as Newsletter sponsor OWC digs deeper on their blog to help their clients figure out what's going on?

(video) On the HDTVTest YouTube channel, they put the Apple TV autocalibration feature to the test. This is worth watching, if only for when a client tells you they used this feature and want to give you a new batch of color notes from their 'calibrated' tv. (via Marc Wielage)

"After extensive testing the team determined that essentially every piece of WiFi hardware on the planet is vulnerable to at least one of these attacks.  Thankfully they are rather hard to take advantage of, more so now that they can be patched."

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.

If you haven't been paying attention, UFOs (or Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon - UAP - as the feds are now calling them) are in the news. If you're looking for a rational eye witness then this is a good interview to watch.

Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you next Sunday (or the Sunday after that).
