THOSE INSCRUTABLE LISTS #2:
ESOTERIC TITLES OF THE MINOR ARCANA
When we work with Tarot, we work with symbols.
Some of these are pictorial and some are
invisible, but like all symbols, they invest the
objects and energies of everyday life with meaning
and raise them to the level of inner truth.
The esoteric attributes of Tarot are the invisible
symbols that lie unobserved behind the pictures in
the cards. They belong to a magical tradition of
meaning as old as the civilization we're all part
of. To know and use them adds the full power of
that tradition to your readings.
In that tradition, every card in Tarot has an
esoteric title. The titles of the numbered Minor
Arcana cards all begin with "Lord of ..." The
intention of this prefix is to remind you that all
the Minor Arcana cards are divine attributes that
you, and everyone else, can find in yourselves.
To discover the divinity in these titles is a
challenge, but worth every bit of the effort you
put into the process. When you succeed, the way
you read these cards will change forever.
Here are the titles of the numbered cards of the
Suit of Cups:
2: Lord of Love
3: Lord of Abundance
4: Lord of Blended Pleasure
5: Lord of Loss in Pleasure
6: Lord of Pleasure
7: Lord of Illusory Success
8: Lord of Abandoned Success
9: Lord of Material Happiness
10: Lord of Perfected Success

In this section we will feature tidbits on a
specific tarot card. While there are many
systems and decks to choose from in the world
of tarot, here we use the Universal Waite
Tarot images and symbols.

THE STAR
Esoteric Title: Daughter of the Firmament, Dweller Between the Waters
Astrological Attribution: Aquarius = Fixed Air
Qabalistic Attribution: Path #28 on the Tree of Life --
from Netzach (#7 / Victory) to Yesod (#9 / Foundation)
The Star emits a dazzling light, and with it,
themes of hope, love and optimism. The central
star in this card is the eight-pointed star of
Venus. Other references to the central star are
that of Innana, from Sumerian legend, and the
Egyptian reference to Sothis/ Isis /Sirius.
When Sothis/Sirius rose in the sky, it marked the
beginning of the New Year and the annual
inundation of the Nile. New Year's Day brought
the life-giving waters of rebirth and renewal to
the Nile region. The Goddess Isis is depicted in
The Star card as the kneeling female, embodiment
of the perfect balance between the watery realms
of emotion and the solidity of manifest earth.
Suggested meanings:
A shining example, new life, inspiration,
meditation, rest, relaxation, faith in yourself
and others.
Purification, regeneration, hope, inspiration.
Peace and serenity. Spiritual practices lead to
cleansing and renewal. The wish for enlightenment
manifests as solitary ritual. You have nothing to
hide and nothing to fear. Good health, good
spirits, good fortune.
