Bi-weekly musings on random esoteric
attributions, alternating between Major and
Minor Arcana cards. Esoteric attributions
come before the picture on the cards. Since
they apply to almost any deck, this series
is not illustrated.

THE MAGICIAN'S NAME:

Not “a” magician, The Magician, the one
and only Magician! The Magician in tarot.
The name of a Major Arcana card is its center,
from which all knowledge about that card is
derived.

Magic is the very first skill, the ability to
make things appear and disappear again at
will. The first power any of us possess. The
deepest instinct any of us has. The power to
make things appear by saying Yes, and to
make things go away by saying No. What
every infant knows before they can speak.

ESOTERIC FUNCTION: Life and Death

All but 3 Major Arcana cards have
Esoteric Functions, which are abilities we
all possess and work we all must do. Life
and Death are the magical transformation
of appearance and disappearance into the
first reality.

You could say that what lives appears. What
dies disappears. This is true of galaxies and
stars. It is also true of us and everything else.

Appearance and disappearance are the
essence of The Magician’s act. Life and
Death are the repeating patterns of The
Magician’s performance. From his empty
hat somehow comes a rabbit. Into the hat,
the rabbit somehow disappears.
