The Call
Special Article by Taylor Tagg

Of all the lessons I've learned in life, one of the most healing was giving away what I no longer needed mentally, emotionally, and physically.

In doing so, I discovered what was lying underneath, my true nature.

It was a space where I could purely choose who I wanted to be. I chose love, kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.

The Call (Part 3 of a Special Journey of Giving)

There was no doubt what I needed to to do. It was apparent the Chhim family was not finding favor with others to help donate a kidney. Something in me said, “its time for you to step up Taylor.”
So, I called the Westchester Medical Center back and told them I would be willing to donate my kidney to Tony. A lot of testing needed to be done to make sure it was a go, but I committed right then and there to helping a friend in need. For me, no matter what happened from that point forward, there was no turning back.
With the coast being clear, all I had to do was prepare to give my kidney away. I was delighted to do so.

I was scheduled to go to New York in mid May, ten days before the surgery to do all of the pre-operation testing.

About a week before the pre-op date, I sent an email to my transplant coordinator asking if there was anything I needed to do before I came to New York. She called me back later that day and gave me a shock that I didn't see coming.

She said, "the surgical teams have decided not to go forward with the surgery."

What!?

I was confused.

After months of testing, scan, exams, MRIs, CT scans, and every other test you can imagine (thank you Westchester Medical by the way) to determine if I was a true match, the teams had hit a snag that they couldn't get around.

The vein structure coming from my kidney was different than Tony's (the reciepient), but that wasn't the problem. The problem was would my smaller veins hold up over time connected with Tony's one larger vein?

The answer to the surgeons was no, not for the long haul.

My kidney might have lasted 2-5 years, but they were looking for a setup that would last 20. That was important to Tony because this was going to be his second transplant. His mother gave him her kidney five years ago and it had failed.

Tony needed a kidney that would last in his body to make sure the rejection medication would continue to work. With that info, the surgeons made the heartbreaking decision to call the surgery off in the 11th hour.

The Chhim family and I were in disbelief.

We weren't aware of this problem until we got the news that the surgery had been cancelled.

Apparently, the surgical teams talked about scenarios and what ifs for a week trying to come up with a solution.

But in the end, it was best for Tony's health to wait for another donor and I accepted the decision.

I felt for Tony, who knew nothing was guaranteed, but felt like a lottery winner when we were found to be a perfect blood match.

It was a tough few days getting used to the fact that the surgery wasn't going forward.

I had made several preparations and adjustments to my life to ensure this surgery would take place smoothly.

I left a job that wasn't a fit for me anymore and prepared my mind and heart to give away a living organ.

I also felt somewhat abandoned with the news, but at the same time I felt greatly loved.

What did I want to believe about this amazing thing that came into my life?

I fully believed that the decision to not go forward was made with everyone's best interest in mind.

That was my choice point to moving forward and putting it behind me.

And faith did rise.

I also felt there must be another piece to the puzzle yet to be revealed and it was up to all of us to be patient and wait on it.

I took comfort in knowing that even though life throws us a serious curve ball occasionally, if we will wait on the pitch we will knock it out of the park.

I believe the best is yet to come for Tony, the Chhim family, and for all of us.

We must have faith in the future that only God can see.

And the silver lining is that I now have a new friend in Tony who I call my brother.

**Additional Note: I decided to go to New York during my scheduled pre-op visit to spend time with Tony and the Chhim family. It was a time to put the news behind us, renew our spirits, and look forward to the good things that are on their way. I'll never forget that day.

Here are some pictures from that special time.

Additional Update: Since my return to Memphis, I have decided to place my name on the kidney donor list through the Methodist UT transplant program. I'm still open but we will see what happens.

Here is what a recent client said about her coaching and healing experience

"Taylor was so easy to connect with that it made the first meeting completely comfortable. He was thoughtful, yet direct. One could feel the knowledge he wanted to share and passionately knew he wanted to help.

As we continued, the exercises became harder but Taylor was able to comfort me in a healing way through each step. He was also able to customize each session for what I needed. I have never experienced a therapy or coaching session as Taylor constructs his. It is completely life changing.

Within 3 months, I have been able to stand with straight shoulders, walk around with a smile, and confidently stare many fears in the eyes. It not only has allowed me to understand how to love myself but be more aware of those around me to ensure I am setting healthy boundaries. I could write a book for the transition I am continuing to go through and I give all my thanks to Taylor for guiding me. I am forever thankful!" - Stephanie S.
