Our grands are in the Bahamas this week. We picked them up for the day on Saturday, to see them before they headed out of town. We went to the park and then out to eat. At lunch we talked about many philosophical ideas, including several jokes. “Grand Ma Ma, why did the cow become an astronaut?” “Why?” “He wanted to go to the moooo – n.” I asked Reynolds if he knew Grandpoppy’s name. “Jim,” he replied. “What is my name?” He looks confounded and Grandpoppy whispered in his ear.” Reynolds shouts out “Am.” Always fun with the boys.

Summer is in full swing, and we attended our first in-person church service on Sunday. It was fun. The minister talked about food choices and food sensitivities. Taking care of the temple, he called it. No masks and plenty of handshakes and hugs. Let’s hope the variant strain does not present problems. I think we are ready to move back to our BP (before pandemic) lives.

The value of our home has gone up $100,000 since we bought it. I am in shock! We closed in November of 2020. It is only a 1,450 square foot house. We were lucky to buy it right before the price of real estate rose. One of my favorite thoughts is, “I am lucky.” Some people say they do not believe in luck, but I think it is a good thing to believe in. Who wants to think, “Nothing ever goes my way”? People think luck implies a random universe and that does not fit with their belief that everything in life is in a Divinely orchestrated pattern. I believe that too, but the word luck is so cozy and friendly, that I am not willing to throw it out of my lexicon. I think the word luck means living in an abundant flow of good. And I’m all for that. That’s it for the Anne report. Have a lucky day.

Not All is Good, But Good Comes from All

Charles Fillmore, the co-founder of Unity, remarked, “Metaphysicians have so thoroughly trained themselves to say, “All is good,” that they gulp down all the unsavory messes of life. We in Unity differ very radically from those who hypnotize themselves into mental torpor by continually holding the thought that all is good and applying it indiscriminately to all that appears.”

We look at every situation through the lens of pleasure or pain. The substance of life is pure, but we mold it through our perception, thoughts, and emotions. We redefine every moment as good or bad, according to our take on the situation. We need to see the bad, at least at first glance. If we cannot say, “It’s not all good,” we live in a world of positive denial. We cannot get to the “Good Comes From All” part of any situation, until we see the situation as it is.

There are a million ways to perceive reality. Take, for instance, the following, that helps us place mistakes in a powerful light. This was written by Neil Gaiman to help us start the New Year with an unusual, yet brilliant, message.

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and, more importantly, you’re Doing Something.

So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work, or family or life.

Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”

I was fortunate to hear the late Og Mandino speak at an Allstate winners’ conference in Bermuda. Though it was more than 40 years ago, I am still touched by this man. Due to alcoholism, he lost everything; his family, his money, and life as he knew it. He was suicidal, but instead of killing himself, he went to the local library and took out several self-help books. In studying these books, he began to see his way out of misery. He told the audience, “You will be successful as a failure, until you admit your mistakes.” After those middle years, Mandino went on to become a successful figure in the same movement that saved his life. Those losses allowed him to redefine his life and he came to hold them as sacred. His grail was not shiny and ornate; it was tarnished and dented.

Knowing that good can come from everything means that even our mistakes can initiate divine restoration. Even though something is lost, something can always be gained. There is one caveat to this powerful principle. When we expect the worst from life, we find it. When we expect the best from life, we will find that as well. As we raise our spiritual intelligence, we come to know that all of life will not be hunky dory, but that which had been discombobulated, can be re-combobulated, in new, better, and different ways.

The Good Principle is the law that the Universe uses to run things, and it is one of my favorites: Not All is Good, But Good Comes from All. When we live life in remembrance of our good, even though it makes a few scary pitstops, we will always find that our lives become EZier and EZier.
