  The Anne Report

The Anne Report

Dear ,

Finally, after more than a year of staying home and staying alive, we ventured out on our first vacation. It was one of those situations: pay $200 and get a $200.00 gift certificate back, after listening to a spiel on time shares. The last words I heard from my neighbor, before we drove off, was, “Don’t buy one. It is a rip off.” Fall before last I sat with my friend through one of those sales pitches in Orlando. Well, it got me a trip to see Harry Potter!

Sunday we drove from Summerville to Mt. Pleasant, to drop off our dog, Lucy. She looked like we’d shot her, as we left her pining at the front door of my daughter’s home. I hope she’s not still at the front door waiting for us to come back. Yes, I’ve seen those videos where the dog comes to the train station every day to see if his owner will return that day. Everyone knows the owner is dead except the dog. Heart wrenching. Why do I even watch those animal videos? The sheep who has two feet of hair because she has not been shaved for years. The dog who has mange and has ribs poking through paper thin skin. What is my late-night fascination with these poor animals?

Sunday evening we went to see my great niece, Shelby, and her boyfriend, in Jacksonville, FL. We toured her new home; then she fixed a lovely meal. We left and drove to Lake City, FL through the storm from hell. The sky repeatedly lit up and the rain looked like a waterfall. I am glad Jim did the driving. I was a timid driver before; then, after the auto wreck last year, I’m even more like a scaredy cat driver. Monday we drove over to Destin, FL, and this afternoon we hear some sweet guy pouring his heart out, doing his best to sell us a time share that we will never buy. Do you think I should tell him my next-door neighbor has a time share we could buy? And that’s it for the Anne report.

Bearing the Pain of Others

Some things need to be transcended. They really do. We have filters that selectively screen out material we do not want to understand, cannot deal with, or that we do not believe. We take a stand, and only allow beliefs into our awareness that confirm our position. As you probably know, it is referred to as confirmation bias. These are emotional, protective devices, concocted by our egoic minds, that harm us more than they protect us. These things need the power of transcendence.

Positive thinking is an amazing medicine, but when taken for an illness we do not have, it is destructive. What thoughts and emotions do not need to be transcended? What legitimate problems are not to be solved with positive mind psychology? What things do we need to face?

I recently read of poor women’s plight in Thailand. They are routinely sold into sex slavery. Their destitute parents, who use their religion and desperation to justify their betrayal, sell their daughters into a culturally supported sex industry. Women are taught that only men can reach enlightenment and that their karma for doing bad things resulted in their being incarnated as a woman. Since women are regarded as inferior, their only hope is to endure their difficulties, and hope to be reincarnated as a man. This sounds ridiculous to us, but when we look deep into the marginalization of women in many Christian and Muslim religions, we easily spot similarities. The discounting and even freezing out of women is obvious to those who are willing to look past their conditioning. Though some might disagree, it is difficult for women to be seen as and treated as equals in a patriarchal religion or society. The power brokers of the patriarch hold fast to the idea that women are less than, as they glorify the structures they put in place to guard their beliefs and positions of control.

When I read about the women in Thailand, my heart lurched, because I had been to the most famous sex district in Bangkok. I was exploring the city alone and I wandered into the Patpong district by mistake. My imagination told me that these women chose this career because it was a lucrative and they had choice in the matter. But they may have been young women, sold by their impoverished parents, for money they desperately needed. These slaves cannot escape to freedom because they have no possessions and no place to go. Furthermore, if they leave, their parents are obligated to pay back the monies they received when they sold their children. Parents coerce their daughters and guilt trip them into staying. They offer no sanctuary. They endure endless violence and exposure to disease. The women work until they get AIDS, which is usually about three to five years, and, when left untreated, they die.*

While EZosophy principles encourage us not to suffer over others’ suffering, it is spiritually intelligent to have compassion for their horrific lives. When any situation comes into our awareness and pulls at our heartstrings, it is our intuitive signal to stop, embrace the moment, and listen. This is the thing we must face, that which arises in our lives, that which cannot be made positive. There are some things that are ours to suffer about, because, in some way, they speak to our personal suffering as well. How do we address the darkness that crosses our paths? We can ask, “What can I do to relieve the suffering in this situation?” We may hear specific instructions, that create our life’s calling. Or our inquiry might usher in concerns that inspire us to pray, in our own way, for the resolution of the suffering.

Tonglin is a Buddhist practice in which one breathes in the suffering and pain of others and sends, through the exhale, relief and healing. It is a breathing prayer, done in stillness, that moves us into an energetic position of giving to others in a way that supports them as it creates profound changes in our attitudes and the direction of our thoughts.

We cannot save the world, but in our need to make a difference, we must be willing to see where the difference needs to be made. We cannot solely and blindly be about our own business. Jesus first asked, “Father, if it be thy will, let this cup pass from me.” He asked for himself. But in Jesus’ final and darkest moments, his thoughts were on others, “Father, forgive them, for they know what they not what they do.” These two actions offer a powerful teaching. It's “me,” then “we.” Not, “Me, me, me, me.”

When we pass through the human condition, immobilized by the desperation of humanity, we do not really live, but when we pass through, never touched by the suffering of the others, we live in a narcissistic prison.

“Not my will, but thy will be done.” That declaration includes everyone, everything. The kingdom of love offers no exclusivity, but it does ask that we hold our metaphorical arms open to those who suffer and do what we can to bring relief. It may be prayers, resources, or empathy, but we can be sure that when we serve as open channels of compassion and love, our lives become EZier and EZier.

This group is a place to post uplifting affirmations and thoughts about prosperity and abundant living. Let’s create a right relationship with money so that we feel comfortable about money. Let’s use money as it’s meant to be used, and not as a way to accumulate power or to fill a void. We don’t need money to buy more stuff. We need it to create a world that works for everyone. We want to cast off old beliefs of lack and reclaim our natural state of abundance. Anne, AKA Dr. Money, posts a nightly goodnight video for the prosperity team, and everyone who watches those videos becomes a part of the prosperity team.
