  The Anne Report

The Anne Report

Dear ,

We plan to go tent camping week after next. Our tent has not been used for several years because we had the RV. Jim decided that we had better test it. Last night Thomas, Reynolds, and I had a camping staycation. We slept in our tent, at least part of the night. Everyone was excited. We pitched the tent in the backyard, played in it throughout the day, and then came bedtime. I read the boys a book and they then settled down to sleep. I sat in bed and read and turned in at about 10:30. As the night progressed, I heard tiny noises. I thought it was the boys turning over. They were in sleeping bags on the tent floor, which was plastic. Every time I woke up, I would check the clock, see that the boys were asleep, and then settle back down. It was not until I felt a drop of water on my ear that I realized the tent was leaking. Though there was a rain fly, the heavy duty dew seeped through the rain fly. I continued to check throughout the night, and everyone was sound asleep, so I would go back to sleep. At 4:30 I felt my pillow and it was soaking wet on the end. The temperature was getting close to the low of 57 degrees. I turned on the flashlight and looked around the tent and saw puddles on Reynolds’ sleeping bag. Nothing to do except go in the house and wake up Grandpoppy to bring the boys in. Though Grandpoppy is strong, the boys, who are now seven, are a bit heavy for him. He managed to get them in and placed them on the quickly assembled pallet on the floor. Then they had to go to the bathroom. Then they had to talk. Finally, they settled down and went back to sleep.

While dampness and cold were a breeze when I was 50, they really affect me at the young age of almost 73. Sunday I could barely move. Everything ached; I was stiff and tired. The moral of that story is that if you are thinking about going camping, be sure to have a leak proof tent and that you are young! Though driving and setting up an RV is a lot of work, it is decidedly more comfortable than tent camping. Hopefully we will be better set for our camping trip at Table Rock State Park week after next. And that’s it for the Anne Report.

We Are Raising a Community

I sit in bed and lazily grab a fingernail file. I peer at my nail beds and wonder what kind of world I grew up in that allowed me to judge them. They were decidedly too short; not long and elegant like those of my friends. I envied them. I looked at hands, at nails, and compared mine to others. What insidious notion made me form such a stringent pattern of non-acceptance? This judgment didn't stop with my nails. I have a mole on my right thigh. It was there from birth. I am not sure when I noticed it, but at some point, it became a blemish. As a teenager, I covered it with a band aid. If I didn’t have a band aid and my thigh was showing, I casually covered the “blemish” with my hand so no one could notice. And then there is my middle toe. It is longer than my big toe. My training was that my middle toe should be shorter than my big toe. My embarrassing toe condition messed up the entire look of my foot. I rarely wore sandals. What about my thighs? Cellulite? OMG! Those things no longer occupy my mind, but I spent years in judgment and sometimes anguish over such nonsensical things. What kind of society allows one to grow into self-doubt and debasement? Why aren't we throwing flowers in the air and singing? What amorphous hammer of criticism underlies our sense of self-worth? Where were the good guys during our formative years? What kind of culture condemns a child’s brightness and creativity?

I think it was different for the guys. They were judged for their ability to produce. They had to be strong and brave but not physically perfect. Since I am not a male, I don’t know what it was like as a vulnerable little boy growing up – one who had to climb too many mountains of societal expectations. But I remember the emotional mandates. They were sissies if they cried and scaredy cats if they were afraid.

Kate Winslet sued two magazines for making her look “better.” They Photoshopped her photos to make her look taller, slimmer, and younger. She thought it was unfair to allow women to think that any woman looked that perfect.

And we wonder why our society is messed up. When we are raised to doubt the ground of our being, we probably will use some seedy defenses to ensure that no one can step on our pain.

There is a nation of indigenous people who got it right. When a person in the tribe committed a crime, they would encircle him or her and sit with them. They would talk tenderly and remind them of who they were. They offered compassion and love. You may have guessed; they had very little crime.

Once I met some friends for lunch. When I arrived, they informed me that our server had an attitude and gave poor service. I immediately said, “He has forgotten who he is. Let’s look him in the eye, change expectations, and treat him with respect.” Everyone agreed, and when he came back, his energy had already changed. By the time I ordered, he was gracious and smiling – attentive to our needs. When we treated him with respect, and gave him our full attention, he became the best server in the world.

Whether we realize it or not, people know our attitude toward them. We can be speaking politely, but if our opinion of them is indifferent, they sense it. They will either try to please us, so they can gain approval, or they will dislike us and feel irritated around us.

We are constantly raising a community, whether the people we interact with are aged or young. Our minds and feelings send signals to others. When we are self-absorbed and not present with others, they sense it. They add it to a perpetually growing arsenal of self-pity or self-hatred.

It is in our best interests to offer loving-kindness to others. A Course in Miracles tells us that giving and receiving are the same. We give away the carbon copy, but we receive the original of what we give. Though it may be difficult to treat people who are harsh, irritated, or angry with kindness, kindness is the most beneficial response for everyone. Almost everyone wants to live on purpose and make a difference. Being kind to others and treating them with respect does make a difference. And, as a bonus, when we live in the gentle breeze of valuing ourselves and others, everything becomes EZier and EZier.

Click to learn about Anne's newest book, The Living Book.

Suppose someone told you that you could change your life radically, for the better, if you spent just three minutes a day doing inner work? Would you believe it? Maybe not, but wouldn't it be worth an investment of three minutes a day to try it?

The Living Book offers just this. Devote three minutes a day to this process and your life will become a living testimony to the seed principle. A tiny seed can grow into a mighty tree, but it must be planted. Plant your daily seed for three short minutes and notice both subtle and miraculous changes in your life. In addition to the daily practice, one can use the process when they are stumped or afraid or angry. This process transforms anger into love. When we plant seeds of light into our thoughts and emotional bodies, we move into higher frequencies of well-being.

Join Dr. Money’s Facebook Group

This group is a place to post uplifting affirmations and thoughts about prosperity and abundant living. Let’s create a right relationship with money so that we feel comfortable about money. Let’s use money as it’s meant to be used, and not as a way to accumulate power or to fill a void. We don’t need money to buy more stuff. We need it to create a world that works for everyone. We want to cast off old beliefs of lack and reclaim our natural state of abundance. Anne, AKA Dr. Money, posts a nightly goodnight video for the prosperity team, and everyone who watches those videos becomes a part of the prosperity team.
