My mother was a bookkeeper, and she worked full time for a concrete company while I was in high school. During the summer, her boss allowed me to work full time for minimum wage, too, as long as I was under the supervision of my experienced mother. Besides learning that I'm not a very good bookkeeper myself, I learned
that an accountant must be extremely meticulous! This was back in the days before computers, so all receipts and expenses were carefully tracked on large green ledger sheets. Every penny was added horizontally and vertically, and all sums had to exactly add up. At any moment, she knew she might be called on to "give account" for the sales and expenses of a large company.
She was never afraid to give account because she worked carefully and diligently. If she made a mistake, she stopped everything to correct it, never going on until every penny was in its proper place.
The Levites gave a financial accounting
for the use of the people's offerings. Our Master also calls us to account for the faithful use of our time, our talents, our homes, our words, and the very gospel message itself.
Our Master knows that we are but flesh and will make mistakes. However, as soon as we sin, we should immediately stop everything
and correct our ways, making restitution where needed, before continuing. If we do not, soon we'll have an accounting mess that will cause much pain and tears to correct.
My mother was one of the best accountants to ever work for that company, and when she finally retired years later, they honored her greatly
for her commitment. Our Master also blesses us when we serve Him faithfully!
