    What I’m Reading

    • Nobody Wants Your Child - by Milton L. Creagh.  My wife and I had the pleasure of attending a talk by Milton at our daughter's middle school last year.  In a Cosby-esque approach, Mr. Creagh (who consults for schools across the country on educational issues and was the former host of the PBS series Parenting Works) delivers a jarring message that is captured in the title of his book.  We are turning out a generation of children who not only are entering a workforce with a reduced number of career opportunities, but even more troubling, many are not prepared (from a skill and attitude perspective) to do even the most basic entry level roles.  Milton takes us on a cultural journey showing how we as parents, along with our children and the rapidly changing world we live in, have created our current dilemma. And, he is not limiting his ire to children from disadvantage backgrounds. There are plenty of examples of children coming from advantaged backgrounds displaying the same problems (any of you parents out there, or those who have hired young people for your businesses can probably relate...). In fact, one thing Milton points out in the book is how many minimum wage businesses are favoring hiring senior citizens over teenagers and young adults.  Mr. Cosby would certainly see eye to eye with Mr. Creagh.

    What I'm Watching
    • Neuroscientist exposes dangers of Electromagnetic Fields.  Video presentation by Dr. Olie Johansson - Associate Professor in the Neuroscience department of the world-renowned Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. The presentation takes place at a technical seminar for physicians on the Environment and Health in Barcelona, Spain. If you have come to accept that we are energy beings, then you can probably understand that being bombarded by EM fields from all our various technology devices, including WiFi and Cellular services, could have dangers for our health.   Dr. Johansson demonstrates that all people are hypersensitive to EMFs.  The health effects are long term - including DNA fragmentation - as well as being linked to a growing number of allergies and even tinnitus. http://youtu.be/I5udG8OCZWY  - *If you want to take some steps to reduce your exposure, see http://www.earthcalm.com - I purchased a couple of their EMF protection products for our home a couple of years ago.  The site has links to further research in this area as well as the European organization that certifies the effectiveness of EMF reduction devices.
    What I’m Listening To
    • Dick Hyman - From the Age of Swing - a modern jazz recording of a more simple, happy, toe-tapping time and place...A+ level sonics. You'll want to play this one all Spring and Summer.
    • Various Artists - 13 Shades Of Blue, Best Of Mapleshade Vol. 2 - Mapleshade is an audiophile recording label which creates all their recordings live (in studio or in interesting acoustic friendly locations) with minimal miking and no digital effects added to the recording. The result is pure music which sounds as if you were in the room yourself.
    • Israel Vibration - Reggae Knights  - great reggae record from this trio who have been playing together since the 1970's - considered to be one of Jamaica's top Roots Reggae bands of all time.  The album has excellent sonics - turn the bass up for this one.
    Quotes of the Week
    • "Connecting dots (or collecting dots).  Without a doubt, the ability to connect the dots is rare, prized and valuable. Connecting dots, solving the problem that hasn't been solved before, seeing the pattern before it is made obvious, is more essential than ever before.  Why then, do we spend so much time collecting dots instead? More facts, more tests, more need for data, even when we have no clue (and no practice) in doing anything with it.  Their big bag of dots isn't worth nearly as much as your handful of insight, is it?"  -Seth Godin
    • "We are never so much disposed to quarrel with others as when we are dissatisfied with ourselves" - William Hazlit

    • "We are all visitors to this time, this place.  We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love...and then we return home." - Australian Aboriginal Proverb
