Foods That Heal

Years ago I read a book The Food Pharmacy by Jean Carper. Even before reading it I felt that the food God designed was best of our body. This book takes it a step farther and shows the things each food is good for. I thought about this book again when I was reading my Oct. issue of All You. In their article Stay healthy all winter long, they talked about foods that boost your immune system.

Yogurt with probiotics, look for live active cultures, increases the healthy bacteria in the digestive system. In addition to eating it for breakfast, you can use it as a base for dips & dressings. Breakfast was also found to be important in a British study, with those who skipped it more likely to get a cold. Green tea is good for a number of things and it appears an amino acid unique to it helps bolster our immune system. Only problem I saw with this, is that it required 8-10 cups daily for a 30% decrease in colds & flus. One interesting suggestion to get more was to brew some tea, and use it for making rice and oatmeal. Pumpkin is full of beta-carotene which the body turns into vitamin A and again is useful for our immune system. I love pumpkin, and wrote
Everything Pumpkin, Recipes and More a while ago. Another interesting thing I did with pumpkin was use it to make chocolate brownines, my family was surprised when I told them and gladly ate them all. You could also use canned pumpkin in a smoothie or add it to Greek yogurt.

The last food mentioned and my favorite is garlic. I call this God's wonder drug. It helps in many areas, including lowering cholesterol and cardiovascular health. Its also a anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-viral, which makes it good for the cold and flu season. During the winter months, we have taken the oil caps with our dinner, like a vitamin. When doing this we found the we got sick less often then those around use and if we did get sick it wasn't as severe.

So this year, may you eat well, sleep plenty and be merry by avoiding illness.
