Welcome to Tui Snider's Cemetery News:
Greetings, fellow tombstone tourists! If you're new here, welcome, and if you're not, great to see you again.
Malaysian graves: In my last newsletter, I mentioned seeing Malaysian graves wrapped in different colors of cloth, and how I need to learn what this meant, to which newsletter reader (and good friend) David M. Habben replied: "Regarding the colored cloths on the gravestones in Old Malay Cemetery, I was told the yellow color cloths indicate royalty. Descendants of Sultan Hussein (of Johor) and Sultan Ali (of Singapore) are buried there. This plot is home to the Royal Mound, a raised enclosure surrounded by bright yellow walls, where carefully inscribed stone markers draped in yellow cloth identify the royal residents resting beneath
them." Isn't that fascinating? Thank you, David, for sharing that info with us. Where am I now? Since my last newsletter, Larry and I have traveled from Sri Lanka to Africa, and are now heading across the Atlantic. I'm learning so much and have so much to share with you... but for now, I've narrowed this newsletter down to the following three items. Here’s what I’ve got for you today: 1) Tour Italy's Cemeteries With Me! 2) Arthur C. Clarke
Grave 3) My recommendation: A Quick Test
1) Tour Italy's Cemeteries With Me! Who wants to tour Italy’s Cemeteries with Me? Before I dive into my recent travels, here's a reminder for new readers as well as those who may have missed my exciting news: I’ve been invited to be a cemetery tour guide through some of Italy’s amazing monumental cemeteries, known for their incredible statues and gorgeous funerary monuments. Along the way, we will also explore ancient Etruscan tombs, a chapel decorated with skulls and bones, and other historic hotspots. (And, of
course, we will enjoy tasty Italian food along the way!) If this sounds fun to you, check out the details at Lisa’s Gryphon Art Tours. (And don’t delay, because
space is limited and folks have started signing up.): I'm super excited about this tour. It's going to be so much fun!
2) Arthur C. Clarke Grave In Sri Lanka, Larry and I took a wild tuk-tuk ride to the cemetery where renowned science fiction author, Arthur C. Clarke, is buried. It took an hour and a half in the sweltering heat, but we finally found his grave.
After wandering through the Catholic section, we explored the Buddhist section, where my favorite mausoleum featured skeletons, elephants, swans, and the traditional Buddhist wheel. (The photo at the top of this newsletter shows the whole mausoleum. It's definitely one I will research later!) We also came across a large freshly shed snake skin! Thankfully, we did not come face to face with any cobras, but our guide just laughed when he saw it, and told us to be very, very careful where we stepped. You can see more photos from this cemetery visit in Sri Lanka here.)
3) My recommendation: A Quick Test And now for something a little different: My friend, Patty, has a knack for writing short stories that are only 200 words long. Each tale is short and sweet with a nifty little twist
at the end. Her latest collection, called A Quick Test, contains 45 tales about aliens, outer space, science gone wrong, and conspiracy theories - each of which is told in exactly 200 words. (Maybe one day, I'll convince her to write a collection of cemetery-themed tales!) I like to read these
stories with the Kindle app on my phone. Each one is like a little treat, and so fun to read. I really enjoy her writing and had to pass it along: Grab your copy of A Quick Test here.

That's all for now! Until next time, if you have any questions or comments, hit reply or email me at [email protected] It's the easiest way to reach me. (I'm
currently behind on email replies, so if I owe you an email, I apologize! Feel free to send me a reminder.) Ciao for now! ~Tui p.s. It may take several days, but I answer every email I get from newsletter readers! If you think yours has slipped through the cracks, please send it again. Sometimes they get
lost, or I miss them.
